WF West 2, Black Hills 1
(Tumwater, WA) The WF West Bearcats came into the Tuesday night match on top of the EVCO 2A tied with Tumwater at 3-0 and left with their undefeated league record intact. But it wasn’t easy as the home team Wolves, a much improved team from last year, were ready to challenge the top of the EVCO league.
The Wolves got things started with a free kick just across midfield and Luke Grunenfelder launched it high and long on the end Gavin Sugarman got his foot on the ball at the top of the 18 and fired it to the left side past Bearcat keeper Noel Montenegro for the 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.
WF West would win the possession time battle and it paid off in the 17th when Nano Jaimes took his 2nd free kick. The first sailed over the top of the goal aiming for an upper goal shot. This time lining up just outside the 18 on top of the goal the defensive wall was set up a bit to the right of Jaimes. Jaimes approached and this time went low and to his left and hit a low laser just inside the post for the tying shot.
That’s how it would go to the break all even at 1-1.
In the 2nd half the Bearcats came out dominating the early possession time and it paid off in the 53rd when the ball was ping-ponging around in front of the Wolves goal and Black Hills unable to clear when Alex Mathuzima tapped the ball to Uzi Lopez Cruz and he finished it with a hard shot to the right of Wolves keeper Jonas Versaw who had no chance of knocking this shot down. The Bearcats would go up 2-1.
WF West kept the pressure up on Black Hills and just 2 minutes later looked like they were going to get that insurnace goal but Versaw came up with a specatcular save blocking a shot with his left arm deflecting it out of the goal.
The Wolves would then begin to take back some possession time and had mutliple chances but the Bearcat backline and keeper Montenegro clamped down to secure the win. Montenegro came up with a huge save in stoppage to ice the hard fought win. (Both saves are in the video highlights below along with all 3 goals.)
Both defenses came to play with their keepers. Montenegro finished with 6 saves including the late one to lock in the win. Versaw was under attack through most of the match and recorded 13 saves with a couple off eye-popping plays.
Our Thorbeckes MVP of the game went to Nano Jaimes for his goal score and overall performance.
WF West improves to 4-0 league play and 5-4 overall while Black Hills drops to 1-3 and 3-5-2. The Bearcats are all alone in 1st place after Tumwater lost to Aberdeen Tuesday

Video Highlights
(This was our 1st ever game at Black Hills field as there is no press box and minimal bleachers. We were able to get internet out ther thanks to AD Nikki Nelson but we are on ground level and right next to the field. So it took us a little time in getting the feel of shooting from so close anbd unfortunately on the 1st goal we missed the shot but got the end. We aplogize for that but learned a lot on working the venue and look forward to more games at Black Hills.)
