The “Swamp Cup” is a football tradition that has spanned more than 100 years between Chehalis and Centralia. For the first time since 1918, W.F. West and Centralia High School will not participate in the annual game. Both of these teams first met in 1907, and since then, the Swamp Cup has been a staple of both towns’ communities. This fall, the two teams will not face off due to scheduling challenges deemed unavoidable, including multiple league changes.

Both athletic directors put out a statement regarding the situation. “Because of this deep significance, it is with genuine care and careful consideration that we share an important update. After extensive discussion and review, both schools and athletic departments have agreed that pausing the event is the most responsible decision at this time.” Unfortunately, it seems that this fall will mark the breaking of a tradition spanning back to before WWI, and has been played 155 times in its history.
