(Puyallup, WA)
After a wild buildup, the Puyallup Vikings outlasted the Camas Papermakers in a six round shootout. Braylon Bowie converted the game winning penalty kick to send Puyallup to state.
The match was a clash of the last two runners up in state. Puyallup made the State Championship match in 2023 while Camas made the title game last year. Camas and Puyallup met in the regular season in a match played back on March 21 that ended in a 2-2 draw. To set the stage for another deep playoff run, a win Saturday night would go a long way to making the journey to playing the final weekend of May a reality.
The winner advanced to state and the district semifinals Tuesday night. The loser of the match would have to win two matches in a row in the consolation bracket to make a return to state.
Camas brought into Sparks Stadium a bend but do not break style of play. Counter attacks were how the Papermakers hoped to make offense. The home side Vikings relied on their offensive weapons Western Washington bound Zack Robertson and Curran Caufield to create chances. Puyallup opened the scoring in the 33rd minute of a penalty kick from Puyallup’s Seth Foster. The penalty kick from Foster was the lone scoring in the first half. Puyallup led 1-0 at the break.
The second half saw Camas play more aggressively on offense. A breakthrough came in the 87th minute when Cooper Schneider’s centering pass went into the goal off a Puyallup defender to even the match and eventually take the contest into overtime.
In the second overtime period, Puyallup was awarded a penalty kick and a chance to book a trip to state. Coleman Farmer took the PK with hopes to send Puyallup back to state. Coleman shot left side and Camas keeper Will Taves blocked the shot to keep Camas in the match. After no scoring in overtime, penalty kicks were needed to decide a winner.
After consecutive misses to start the penalty shootout, a sixth round was necessary to decide who advanced to state. After a save from Puyallup’s Alexis Cruz, it was up to Braylon Bowie to win the game for the Vikings. Bowie shot right side and sent Puyallup to state with a dramatic 2-1 win.
Puyallup with the win books a trip to state and plays Union Tuesday night at 5:30 at Sunset Stadium. Camas faces Mount Rainier in the loser bracket at 7:30 Tuesday night from Art Crate Stadium.
