Winner to State, Loser Out
Tumwater 5, Ridgefield 1
(Tumwater, WA) The Ridgefield Spudders were coming off a miraculous win over Aberdeen to get to this match when they scored 3 goals in the final 10 minutes to force overtime and eliminated the Bobcats in PK’s. Trying to carry that momentum over into this winner to state or your season is over match the Spudders came out firing and caught a slow starting T-Bird squad off guard when Grant Platta set up Ethan Sigman who fired the shot and scored giving Riudgefield an eartly lead in the 11th minute.
Ridgefield continued to press as Tumwater looked to be playing on their heels until the 15th minute when the T-Birds got a good run and Dylan Stevens got the ball into the box and then fouled giving Tumwater a PK. Stevens stepped up and scored firing the shot by keeper Drew Tretheway to tie the match at 1-1.
That seemed to kick start the T-Birds as a rein of attacks and shots would pummel the Ridgefield defense and Tretheway. Tumwater would score twice more before the break when Gavin Cuoio scored on an assist from Stevens inm the 28th. Stevens would then score again prior to halftimne in the 35th on an assist from Thomas Williams and the T-Birds led 3-1 at the half.
Tumwater knew they couldn’t take that lead for granted after what th Spudders did a few nights ago. So in the 2nd half Dylan Stevens would score his hat trick in the 52nd to go up 4-1. Cuoio would get a 2nd goal in the 66th to ice the match. The scoring chances didn’t stop as Cuoio had a chance at his own hat trick with a PK in the 70th b ut Tretheway came up with the stop. Despite giv ing up 5 goals you really can’t blame Tretheway if your Ridgefield who finished with 15 saves including shutting down a PK. That’s how much of an attack Tumwater through at the Spudders.
Tumwater’s defense alswo tightened up dramatically after the early goal. Keeper Davyn McGlivery had 7 saves and got a lot of help from Dylan Salapu, Malachi Vu0ng and Tony Hernandez. Tumwater coach John Hayes told us this was Hernandez’s best game of the year. This leads us to our Thorbeckes MVP of the game and despite the great defensive effort by Hernandez who was in the running we couldn’t ignore a hat trick and an assist by senior Dylan Stevens and Dylan is our Thorbeckes MVP.
The loss ended the Spudders season and they finished 7-13 after a magnificent run into the District tournament as the 5 seed from the GSHL.
Tumwater improves to 12-7 and qualified for the State Tournament. They will find out Sunday what seed they get and where and who they play in the opening round next Tuesday or Wednesday.

WF West 2, Tumwater 1 (2nd OT)
(Tumwater, WA) This was the 3rd time the T-Birds and Bearcats lined up against each other so there were no surprises. This was going to be a match based on execution. Who would be the one to simply be a touch better than the other and that’s exactly how it played out.
In the first half it appeared both teams would have not been able to take advantage of the many runs, corner kicks and other chances both offenses had and it would be scoreless at the break. But the T-Birds had different ideas as they had another run in them in the 38th minute.
Gavin Cuoio blocked a clearing pass and was able to shoot it low toward the near post and got it by Bearcat keeper Noel Montenegro to score the opening goal. Tumwater would take momentum and the lead to halftime.
When the 2nd half began the Bearcats were determined to to punch in the equalizer and did so on a nice play when Alex Mathuzima found Nano Jaimes cutting across and he fired the shot into the net past keeper Davyn McGilvrey. The goal tied the match in the 53rd minute.
The two teams then battled with runs and chances for each side to take control but it would not happen as both defenses were stingy and the match finished 1-1 in regulation.
This pushed the match into OT and near the end of the first 5-minute period the T-Birds got a free kick and Cuoio lined up to try and hit the game winner but sailed it just barely above the crossbar just missing the game winner.
The match advanced to the 2nd 5-minute OT and as the clock ticked down toward the 2:00 stoppage time mark Gage Grisham got on the ball and passed it to Moi Sanchez Hernandez who fired on frame and scored to end the match with the Bearcats headed to the District Championship game and more importantly to the State Tournament.
The Thorbeckes MVP went to Israel Lopez Cruz for his defensive effort controlling the mid-field. WF West will play at Columbia River on Thursday for the District Title kicking off at 6pm.
Tumwater drops into the consolation bracket and will host Ridgefield on Thursday in a winner to state, loser out contest.

Game Story in The Daily World
Tumwater 1, Hudson’s Bay 0
(Tumwater, WA) It didn’t take long the T-Birds to take the early lead when just 20-seconds into the match when Gavin Cuoio sent a pass to Lucas Oltion and he drilled it into the back of the Eagles net with a lightning strike goal. This would end up holding for the other 79:40 of the match.
Hudson’s Bay keeper Osvaldo Santos-Lopez was caught off guard right out of the gate but then settled in denying 7 shots and surviving 6 Tumwater corner kicks to hold the T-Birds right at that single goal scored.
The Eagles did score in the 2nd half on a nice break-away by David Jaras-Farias but he got the jump a second too early and was called for offsides taking the equalizer off the board.
The T-Bird defense did ther rest led by Senior Keeper Davyn McGilvrey with 8 saves including 5 in the 2nd half as the Eagles amped up the offense trying to tie the match up. The backline of Dylan Salapu, Grady Harroun and Avery Hartzell also helped intercepting and interupting an aggressive offense by Hudson’s Bay.
Our Thorbeckes MVP went to T-Birds Keeper Davyn McGilvrey with Oltien, Salapu and Cuoio in the discussion. Had the Eagles come back to win their keeper Santods-Lopez would have been at the top of the list along with Angel Villalobos and Liam Eptaimeros.
Tumwater will host WF West on Tuesday at 6pm in the semifinals. The winner will go to the District Championship match and qualify for the State Tournament. Hudson’s Bay falls into the consolation bracket and will travel to Hockinson on Tuesday for a loser out match that kicks off at 6pm.

Game Story in the Chronicle
WF West 5, Washougal 0
(Chehalis, WA) With the season on the line the WF West Bearcats came up big with a burst of offense in the 1st half scoring 3 goals in about a 7-minute period of time. Colin Bradley began the attack scoring in the 15th minute on an assist from Nano Jaimes. The opening goal gave the Bearcats a surge of momentum and usual starter Moi Sanchez Hernandez was coming off the bench as they were using him sparingly while he is getting over an injury.
It didn’t appear Sanchez Hernandez struggled much as he made an immediate impact scoring in the 18th minute on an assist from Braden Newman to make it 2-0. Sanchez Hernandez wasn’t finished and struck again in the 21st and the Cats led 3-0 going into the half.
Washougal got some good work from starting keeper Michael Jehne but he was under attack for a good portion of the game. The Panthers had a couple of good opportunities to get on the board late in the 1st half but could not find the back of the net.
Grant Cowart, Gavin Cowart and Noah Migaki got off some solid shots but the Bearcat defensive back line constantly interrupted runs prior to getting into the final 1/3 of the field and when they did Bearcat keeper Noel Montenegro was a backstop and left the match in the final 10 minutes with a clean sheet.
The Bearcats let it be known there would not be a comeback in this match as Alex Mathuzima scored less than a minute into the 2nd half on an assist from Moi Sanchez Hernandez to quickly make it 4-0. Sanchez Hernandez would then end the scoring and tally the hat trick with the final goal in the 50th minute.
It was an easy choice to make our Thorbeckes MVP, a hat trick and an assist will pretty much get you the MVP of the match every time so Moi Sanchez Hernandez was our Thorbeckes MVP.
Washougal’s season is over and they finish 4-11 for the season.
WF West is now 8-8 on the season and advances to the District Tournament and are guaranteed at least 2 more matches. They begin on Saturday traveling to Hockinson for a 5pm kick-off.
