Led by Seattle’s Lauryn Nguyen, Northwestern took the National Championship over defending champs and 1-seed, Stanford.
Stanford led 1-0 after Megha Ganne won her match 5&4. Lauryn Nguyen drew Northwestern even with the reigning champs with a 1 UP win over Paula Martin Sampedro. Hsin Tai Lin won her match 3&2 to give Northwestern a 2-1 lead. Kelly Xu brought Stanford back to tie with a 1 UP win in her match. The National Championship came down to the last match, and Dianna Lee drained a putt on the 18th hole to win her match 1 UP and win Northwestern their first National Championship.
Nguyen went to West Seattle, where she won the Metro League Championship in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Nguyem was also named the Washington Golf Junior Player of the Year in 2020. On top of winning the National Championship as a senior, Nguyen was a Preseason All-American and will leave Northwestern as one of the greatest women golfers in the program’s history.
Nguyen, the lone senior on Northwestern, was the first to receive and hoist the National Championship trophy.
