(Auburn, Wa) The wrap-up of the first 3-day weekend with Memorial Day racing with 9 races on the card. A total of 69 horses ran on Monday and for a 7.7 per race average and for the weekend, there were 211 starters averaging 8.1 runners per race. This led to a great weekend in the betting handle with more than 1.6-million on Saturday, 1.8-million on Sunday and 1.5-million on Monday.
The big feature race with undefeated Precise Timing along with Saleen G T and other’s set the table for the 3-year-old fillies this year.
Isaias Enriquez got his first win of the season and then added a big one, Kevin Krigger and Alex Cruz also doubled with Cruz winning career number 999 with Goin’ South in the 4th. Cruz then finished 2nd in the 5th, 6th and 7th races with his best chance in the 7th on Gunnin for Gold that just failed to last with a front running effort.
Kevin Orozco had his 7-day win streak snapped when he came up empty on Monday. Orozco’s best chance coming in was on Precise Timing in the feature but that went wrong from the start and you can read about that below. But if Orozco and Diamond Dee had 50 more yards in the finale he may have caught the winner to extend his streak.
We’ll have more on all the news and notes from Memorial Day weekend racing coming on “The Track Wire” on Wednesday. Right now let’s get to Monday’s race re-caps.
8th Race Feature The Muckleshoot Casino Resort Purse
The feature race of the day featured last year’s Emerald Downs’ Horse of the Meet, Precise Timing with regular rider Kevin Orozco. Precise Timing was 3 for 3 in her first 3 races of her career last year and all her wins were in Stakes races.
The Kay Cooper trained Precise Timing also had 2nd time starter Kir Royale with Francisco Monroy aboard and Beauty Bark with Frank Alvarado. The Cooper trio had plenty of competition with Saleen G T from the Frank Lucarelli barn and Isaias Enriquez up. Trainer O. J. Jauregui sent out Heras Hope from the outside 8 post with Francisco Duran in the irons.
The top two riders did not get the call on any of the morning line choices but Kevin Krigger was aboard Ima Margarita Girl from trainer Scott Tubbs’ barn and Manny Americano rode Recycleyourheart for conditioner Michael Lenzini. Rounding out the tough field was longshot Riverside Rose sent out by owner/trainer Sergio Perez with Jose Rodriguez riding.
When the gates opened 9-1 Kir Royale and 31- Ima Margarita Girl both got good breaks from the gate and went straight to the lead. 9-5 favorite Saleen G T got away in good shape on the outside while 3-1 second choice Precise Timing got pinched at the break and was off a step slow. Orozco had to work her to the outside and loomed up just behind Saleen G T while they chased the two frontrunners as they set fractions of 21.73 and 44.84.
Beauty Bark was futher back along the inside but was finding room and set her up for a solid stretch run. Kir Royale had done enough and backed out, Precise Timing just didn’t have it today and finished off the board while saleen G T cruised to the front and pulled away by at least 3 lengths to win in a final time of 1:03.49.
Beauty Bark ran on well to complete the all “Barkley” exacta as both the top 2 finishers were sired by local favorite Barkley. Ima Margarita Girl did well to hold on to third while Recycleyourheart closed from the back to nab 4th.
Saleen G T races for R. E. V. Racing and trained by Frank Lucarelli. This was Lucarelli’s and Enriquez’ 2nd win on the day. Saleen G T is now 3-0-1 from 4 lifetime starts. She earned $14,820 to push her career earnings to $47,440. Saleen G T is a Washington bred by Barkley out of Knight Club by Matty G and was bred by Nina and Ron Hagen.
Rider Quotes
Isaias Enriquez on Saleen G T: “She is smart! She doesn’t panic she knows what to do and when I asked her with a little tap she ran off . She’s a really nice horse.”
Kevin Orozco on Precise Timing: “Out of the gates she got pinched a little from the 5 and got some dirt kicked in her face which she had never experienced before. There was no room inside so the only clear path was to the outside but by then she didn’t know what to do. She’s never trailed in her life until today. Just wasn’t our day.”

In the Memorial Day finale 7-2 Don’t Tell Hydee broke well in the 6-furlong dash and sat behind longshot River of Ambition. Krigger and 7-2 Hydee had first run and made the most of it bursting into the stretch and extending to a 3 length lead. The lead coupled with her momentum was too much for 9-2 Diamond Dee and Kevin Orozco who was trying to extend his personal win streak to 8 days. Dee and Orozco fell a length short at the line where Don’t Tell Hydee stopped the clock in 1:09.97. Don’t Tell Hydee races for Ed Laney and trained by Scott Tubbs.
La Popis and Julien Couton closed well to take 3rd at 9-1, 5-2 Purrfect Moon with Alex Cruz ended up 4th while 78-1 River of Ambition held 5th to get into the Super High 5 and likely knocking out any potential winner as the there will be a carry-over next Saturday when racing resumes.
