6/21/2025

(Auburn, Wa)  There was one winner in the 20-cent Pick 6 which means the $23,000+ Jackpot was hit. We have the break down below at The Betting Window. There were several streaks on the line and new one emerging in both the jockey and trainer standings and Chel-c Bailey gets her first win while another makes her career debut. Let’s get to the Saturday racing.

The Numbers

Saturday featured 8 races with a total of 58 starters averaging 7.3 per race. The mutual handle certainly bounced back after a season low on Friday night of 810k for 7 races to $1,123,195 for the 8 Saturday races. That’s an average of $140,399 per race.

The average $2 win was also more favorable to cashing decent tickets as the $2 win average of 9-5 odds on Friday jumped to 7-2 on Saturday with only 2 favorites winning and 1 of 2 odds-on in the winner’s circle.

From the Saddle

Bailey gets 1st NW win

Jockey Chel-c Bailey, a native of Enumclaw but graduated from Chewelah-Jenkins High School near Spokane back in 2010 and was a State Champion wrestler. From there she fought in the MMA and was a contestant on Ultimate Fighter 23. She decided to walk away from fighting and follow her passion, horses.

She began riding in 2019 and got her first win at Oaklawn Park on February 28, 2020. Since then she has racked up a 66-79-81 record from 948 starts going into Friday night.

Bailey decided to come back home to where she fell in love with horse racing. Her mounts have been limited so far but after her ride last night we won’t be surprised to see her skills in a higher demand.

Bailey got the ride on 3-1 Benny Buckets for trainer Candi Cryderman and owner John Parker. She rode a well paced race was challenged at the top of the stretch but left plenty in reserve to pull away for a clear win, her first at Emerald Downs.  Bailey is now 67-79-81 from 949 startsb and career earnings of $2,850,729.

Career Debut

While Bailey got her first win at Emerald Downs another made her career debut. Talliyah Timentwa from Colville, WA rode her first race on Saturday. Timentwa took the ride of Ruby Rendezvous in the 4th race for trainer Candi Cryderman. Ruby was 6-1 and she broke well sitting 2nd for the 1st half mile of the 5 1/2-furlong race. But Ruby didn’t have a kick for the stretch and would finish 7th. But Timentwa broke the ice riding in her first official race.

The Streaks

One streak was continued and the other came to an end. Kevin Krigger and Manny Americano both had significant consecutive day win streaks on the line Saturday, with Krigger at 14 straight days and Americano 13. Krigger also led Americano 29-28 in the jockeyu standings.

As the racing progressed, neither rider had found the wiunner’s circle on Saturday all the way to the final race which meant one or both of them would see their streak end, unless somehow they deadheated.

Krigger was on the 1-1 favorite while Americano was on a 14-1 outsider. Although Americano gave it a strong effort finishing 4th, Krigger went wire to wire to win handily and extend his streak to 15 and now leads Americano 30-28.

Cruz Triples, 5 others find victory

5-time defending riding champion, Alex Cruz had a 4 win day earlier in the season and added a triple on Saturday. Cruz had 8 rides and finished in the top 3 7 times going 3-1-3 for the day.

Silvio Amador began the day with a win while David Haldar took the 2nd half of the opening daily double. Alex Cruz, Chel-c Bailey, Kevin Orozco and Kevin Krigger all picked up victories.

From the Barn

Charlie Essex

Charlie Essex capped off a good day with 2 wins taking the 3rd race wsith Kiss of Spice which he also owns and bred and then the feature race with Hannahaza Hetty for owner Katy Farquharson who also bred Hetty. Both wons were ridden by Alex Cruz.

Wright doubles

Blaine Wright pulled back to within 1 wion of current leading trainer Justin Evans. Evans was blanked on Saturday while Wright doubled winning the 2nd race with Square Cat and the final race on Lucy Treasure. Wright didn’t fool the bettors as both were the two favorites that won on the day.

Evans leads Wright 13-12 with Tim McCanna at 11, Howie Gibson 10, Jorge Rosales with 9 and Frank Lucarelli with 8 wins.

Trainer Streaks

As we reported yesterday, trainer Tom Wenzel now has 4 straight wins. Talking with the Emerald media office, Vince Bruun and Joe Withee, unofficially at Emerald they believe Tim McCanna and Frank Lucarelli at one point won 5 in a row.

Wenzel didn’t have a starter on Saturday but has six entered on Sunday including 1 in each Stakes race. Wenzel has a strong chance to tie that mark but won’t likely break itn because he has 2 entries in the second 2-year-old race of the year in the 4th race.

Candy Creek is 4-1 with Julien Couton and Falling Leaves is 7-2 with Carlos Montalvo. Both horses are owned by George Todaro. But unless his runners dead-heat, his streak will be snapped with just one of them or neither of them winning.

Jewell has his own streak

Ian Jewell

Newcomer Ian Jewell got his 1st 2 wins last weekend and continued his hot streak adding his 3rd win of the season on Saturday with Our Bloke in the 6th race with a perfect ride from Kevin Orozco. This was Jewell’s 3rd straight win. He did have 30-1 Donna Wyn entered in the Hastings Stakes on Sunday but hs scratched her from the race.

All of Jewell’s winners are owned by WYN Racing Stable, so the owners also have the 3 race winning streak on the line the next time they send out a runner.

Pick 6 Pays Big!

Emerald Downs’ decision to go back to the 20-cent Pick 6 Jackpot was proven to be the right call on Saturday after a single ticket holder cashed in for $23,738.76. The Jackpot format is to win the full pot you must be the single winning ticket.

If no one has all 6 winners or there are multiple winning tickets then there is a carryover to the next day. Going into Saturday a carryover of more than $17,000 was waiting for the Saturday bettors. More than 6k was bet into the pot and 1 winning ticket emerged when 1-1 Lucy Treasure won the 8th race.

The other interesting thing is there was no huge longshot that came in knocking out a whole bunch of people but instead multiple 3rd, 4th and 5th favorites.

Let’s take a look at the winning ticket. There was only 1 favorite to win and that was Lucy Treasure in the 8th and final race. The winning odds were 5-1, 5-1, 3-1, 4-1, 7-2, 1-1. Those odds look like it should have been hit mutliple times but why did only 1 have all 6? Let’s take a look.

The winning ticket began with 5-1 Kiss of Spice who was the 4th favorite in the field of 6, In the 4th race, 5-1 Prancing Matilda finished 1st and was the 4th favorite in the field of 7. The 5th race was a field of 9 and 2nd choice Benny Buckets won at 3-1. Maybe this is where people stretched out more because of the larger field.

In the 6th race a field of 7 after a scratch saw Our Bloke win at 4-1 odds but was the 3rd favorite but the top choice was 3-1 and 6 of the runners were between 3-1 and 5-1. The 7th race saw Hannahaza Hetty win at 7-2 as the 2nd favorite but after the 9-5 favorite there were 4 runners between 7-2 and 5-1. It was capped with the favorite.

So even though it looked like a very gettable Pick 6 and it was where you either were right on the few top 2 and spread enough to get the others or spent a huge amount to get. For example, to go 4 deep in all 6 races, even at 20-cents a bet the total it is an $820 wager.

I would have loved to have seen this carryover to the first Super Stakes Sunday but one person nailed and congrats. Let’s hope we can see another 3 or 4 of these pools get over the 20k mark this season.

Let’s get to the Saturday’s Races!

7th Race and Feature Race Muckleshoot Casino Resort Purse

The feature race of the day had a field of 7 fillies and mares going 6-furlongs. 9-5 favorite Grease Missile went to the lead but didn’t have much on the tank on this day and faded to 2nd last. Hetty and Cruz set a quick 1/2-mile of 43.63 and as they turned for home a line of runners would take their shots and all would be repelled one at a time with Zippoin Sevenz, I’m Telling Mom and closer Lets Declare Peace. No one could get by Hetty who won by a length in a final time of 1:09.56.
