Round of 64

With 32 matches going on, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort was full of great golf, great matches, and some upsets. The field has been trimmed in half as the players advance to tomorrow’s two rounds of match play. Here are some of the highlights from today’s Round of 64.

Emilia Doran from Cary, North Carolina, won in extra holes in a thrilling back-and-forth match over Reagan Zibilski from Springfield, Missouri. Zibilski was leading 1 Up through 15 holes when Doran tied the match on the 16th. Zibilski won the 17th hole, but Doran tied the match on the 18th hole to continue the match. On the 20th hole, Doran won with a birdie to advance to the Round of 32.

Another topsy-turvy match was Katy, Texas’s Maye Huang’s win over Menlo Park, California’s Alexa Pineda. Pineda was leading 2 Up going to the 15th hole, when Huang won that hole, the 16th, and the 18th hole to flip the match and win 1 Up.

Spain’s Carolina Lopez-Chacarra and Austin, Texas’s Farah O’Keefe went into extra holes today as well. Lopez-Chacarra was 2 Up through 12 holes when O’Keefe won the 14th, 16th, and 17th holes to take a 1 Up lead. Lopez-Chacarra won the 18th hole to keep the match going, and on the 19th hole won the match to keep her week alive.

Australia’s Jazy Roberts held a 3 Up advantage over Byron Center, Michigan’s Macie Elzinga through seven holes. Roberts then had a 2 Up lead through 14 holes. Elzinga won the 15th, and Roberts recovered by winning the 16th. Elzinga needed to win the next two holes to extend the match, and she did. On the 19th hole, Roberts won the hole and the match.

The marathon match of the day was between Camarillo, California’s Catherine Rao and Boston, Massachusetts’s Allison Paik. Paik won the 13th and 14th holes to take a 2 Up lead. Rao won the next three holes to take a 1 Up lead going to the 18th hole. Paik won the hole to extend the match, and the pair tied the 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, and 23rd holes. On the sixth playoff hole, Rao won with a birdie to move on.

The co-medalists of Rianne Malixi and Asterisk Talley both lost their Round of 64 matches. Arianna Lau, who was in a playoff this morning, won over Malixi by winning the 18th hole. Malixi tied the match up four times in a nine-hole stretch, but the defending champ never held the lead at any point in the match. Talley’s opponent also needed to advance in this morning’s playoff. Ella Scaysbrook won 6 & 4 over Talley and didn’t allow last year’s runner-up to win a single hole, and closed it out by winning four holes in a row.

A staggering 15 of the 32 matches went to the 18th hole or beyond. The Round of 32 starts early at 7:15 AM with the first match teeing off, and the Round of 16 will begin in the afternoon. Golf Channel will have live coverage from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM for the Round of 16.
