(DuPont, WA) The Home Course hosted a U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifier. Only three spots were available for next month’s championship at Troon Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Seattle’s Paul Mitzel, Canada’s Kevin Carrigan, and Brentwood, California’s Garett Wagner were the co-medalists, and the three players who have advanced to the U.S. Mid-Amateur. All three players shot three-under 69s to record the low round of the day.
Mitzel started out with birdies on the second and third holes. After a bogey on the 11th hole, he birdied the tough par-3 14th and the par-5 16th holes for his round of three-under. Wagner started his round with a bogey on the second hole, but birdied the third and sixth holes to go out at one-under. Wagner birdied the 11th and 12th holes before a double bogey on the 14th hole. He recovered with clutch birdies on the 15th and 18th holes to secure his spot. Carrigan birdied the third hole, eagled the 10th hole, birdied the 11th and bogeyed the 14th to card 69. Seattle’s Jake Utley and Kennewick’s Kris Martonik are the alternates after firing rounds of two-under 70s.
The hardest hole on the course was the 12th hole, a 205 yard par-3. There were only two birdies on the day and 37 bogeys and four double bogeys. The hole saw an average score of 3.56. The easiest hole was the 16th hole, a 525 yard par 5. The hole played nearly a half stroke under par, seeing an average score of 4.53. There were two eagles, 37 birdies and only four bogeys or worse. The back nine played slightly harder than the front, with a scoring average of 38.34, where the front saw a scoring average of 38.08.
