(Seattle, WA) The Seattle U Redhawks have been on a roll offensively scoring 9 goals in their last 3 matches. Seattle U 3 Denver 0
The Redhawks got the game started with a bang scoring just 3 minutes into the match. Cooper Brunell sent a low shot in a crowded 18 yard box for the 1-0 early lead.
Seattle U wasn’t done scoring in the 1st half. After a couple of passes by Cooper Brunell and Luke Hammond to swing the ball from one side of the field to the other it was Aiden Fong that planted and ripped a shot past the diving Denver keeper.
Denver had their chances taking 7 shots in the half but Charlie Lanphier was there for the Redhawks picking up 3 first half saves. Seattle U took 8 shots and one corner in the half. The only 2 on frame found the back of the net.
Halftime Seattle U 2 Denver 0
The second half saw a lot of action with both teams getting shots off. Both teams finished with 19 shots apiece. It was a physical match from the start but in the 76th minute a direct red was shown to Seattle U’s Andre Philibbosian. Andre was making a run to try to clean up a shot attempt. Denver’s keeper Isaac Nehme bobbled the ball but collected it just before colliding with the crashing Philibbosian. After a review by the officials the call was upheld and the Redhawks had to finish the match with 10 men.
Denver’s best chance to score in the match came on a penalty kick in the 87th minute. The Pioneers sent a corner into the box but a jersey pull made the intended target fall to the ground. After a discussion with the AR on the sideline and VAR the penalty was given. Jake Smith got too far under the ball and sent it skyward ending the Pioneers chance.
The Redhawks strike one last time on a counter led by Yeider Zuluaga. Zuluaga got free right down the middle of the field and outran one defender. After a couple of stepovers he got another defender and the keeper to freeze just enough to find Nico Wiskel streaking into the 18 yard box for the tap in goal and 3-0 Seattle U win.
Seattle U (2-3-3) opens WCC play on the road at St. Mary’s (0-3-4) on Saturday September 27th. Denver starts Summit League play at home against Kansas City also on the 27th.
