9/23/25

Week 3 of the NFL season was the most chaotic week so far of the season and led to a pretty wild final result for Professor DW’s Football Pick ’em Challenge. There were a number of upsets across the league and more importantly to the contest, plenty of blocked kicks as four field goal attempts were blocked, the most in a single week since 1991. 12 was the magic number as eight contestants had the same score after Detroit got a huge road win over Baltimore on Monday night.

Those eight would come down to the tiebreaker as Jim Spinelli, Lee Stockwell, Jennifer Kickner, Trent Twamley, RJ Wilson, Mark Westley, Alicia Clark, and Skip Smith all tied for the top spot. Some tried to use the Price is Right rule in their favor but none of those contestants pulled out the win. One guess was way over the total of 2,159 yards which narrowed the field to three. Lee Stockwell (2,083), Jennifer Kickner (2,382), and Alicia Clark (2,145). The win would go to Alicia Clark who was just 14 yards off of the total. If those four kicks weren’t blocked, Jennifer Kickner would have been right in the race. However, if one more kick was blocked, Alicia’s guess would have been over, giving Lee the win and Jim Spinelli second.

However things played out the way they did and Alicia gets the win and qualifies for Professor DW’s Postseason Tournament. She also crushed the Professor, giving her the extra $10 for a $27 win. Lee Stockwell also qualifies for the Postseason Tournament, bringing the total number of entrants to six with 30 more opportunities to gain access available. The winner of the Postseason Tournament wins the Ticket Bonanza! That includes two tickets to the Mariners, Seahawks, Kraken, Sounders, Storm, Tacoma Rainiers, and Emerald Downs. Again, both can continue to play in the regular season to try to block out some of the spots for the tournament to up their chances of winning.

DW had an abysmal performance this week and actually finished in dead last place with just six correct guesses. It felt like the Professor closed his eyes and just pointed at teams, but he probably would have done better if he just used that strategy. We are questioning DW’s sports knowledge after starting strong the first two weeks and laying an egg this week.

We finally had a stunning upset in the NFL this week as the Cleveland Browns took down the early favorites of the season in the Green Bay Packers 13-10. Only one contestant correctly picked that game as Shawn O’Neill saw the upset coming. Other upsets that weren’t picked very much were Carolina over Atlanta, Chicago over Dallas, and Detroit beating Baltimore.

Week 4’s contest is up. The deadline to get your entry in is 4pm on Thursday so get signed up now. Congratulations Alicia and Lee and best of luck to everyone this week.
