(Puyallup, WA) The Puyallup Viking came into Fridays game with a 3-0 record and looking to keep the momentum going into their first SPSL North game as the visiting team. Emerald Ridge opened the season with a win over Kentwood but injuries dimmed the Jags early shine.  Both teams call Sparks Stadium home who would come out on top under the lights?

Puyallup 54 Emerald Ridge 0

Puyallup scored on their first 3 drives of the game with only the first drive starting on their side of the field. The first drive went 4 plays and ended with a 20 yard touchdown pass from Luke Parker to senior WR Jayden Woodland for the 6-0 lead. The next drive started at the Jags 18 and ended with a 4 yard Briytan Bailey touchdown run and the 12-0 Vikings lead with 8:39 to go in the 1st quarter. Puyallup’s 3rd drive again started deep in Jags territory at the 30. It ended up being an 8 play drive after several flags looked to stall the drive. Until Luke Parker found Lawson Looker for a 15 yard strike to make it 18-0 lead. The only thing the Vikings couldn’t do early was score an extra point.

Emerald Ridge went 3 and out on their first 2 drives of the game. Their 3rd drive started with just over a minute to go in the 1st quarter. They went 9 plays and got their first 3 first downs of the game but ended with a punt. Their next drive started after a Jerin Biembongo interception. However a sack on 4th down snuffed out the spark the Jags saw.

The Vikings would jump out to a 25-0 lead after a 9-yard QB keeper by Luke Parker and a successful PAT. Parker added to his happy receiver corps when he found Jasiah Denmark on a 24-yard dime for the final touchdown of the half.

Halftime Puyallup 32 Emerald Ridge 0

The second half was a lot like the first Puyallup got great field position and their defense stifled the ER offense. Briytan Bailey ran in his 2nd touchdown on the first Vikings drive in the 2nd half to put them up 39-0.

Emerald Ridge got their 2nd interception of the game on Puyallup’s next drive when Donald Robertson tracked the ball that went off the helmet of the intended receiver. However the Puyallup D buckled down and forced a fumble for their only takeaway on the night.

The running clock was initiated just as the 3rd quarter ended with a Luke Parker to Jayden Woodland 3 yard touchdown. Parker had one more touchdown in him, this time finding Lawson Looker from 58 yards out, who would also score the 2 point try for the 54-0 final score.

Stats and MVP

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game went to Puyallup’s junior quarterback Luke Parker. Parker was sensational in every facet of his game. Passing, he went 16-20 for 236 yards and five touchdowns through the air while adding seven carries for 61 yards and a touchdown. A total of 297 yards and six touchdowns made it a no-brainer to name the QB our MVP of the game.
Elsewhere for the Puyallup Vikings, Briytan Bailey had a successful game with 13 carries for 65 yards and two touchdowns and a five-yard reception. Jayden Woodland had a team-high six catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns and a two-yard carry. Jai Mitchell tallied four catches for 43 yards and Lawson Looker had four catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Jasiah Denmark had one catch for a 24-yard touchdown. Michael Pulalasi, Kitiona Tupua, and Damien Buob each recorded a sack and Cody McFadden had a fumble recovery.
For the Emerald Ridge Jaguars, they had a tough time getting things going on the ground as Tre Robinson tallied 11 carries for four yards and two catches for 10 yards. Cody Dalton came in in the second half and carried the ball six times for six yards. Quarterback Brayden Paulino was the most successful rusher with three carries for 22 yards while going 7-16 through the air for 35 yards. Noah Jones had two catches for 14 yards, and Zab Zenkner had two catches. Hunter Rusler had a 10-yard reception and Corbin Williams had a five-yard reception on Nathan Rodriguez-Huerta’s only pass attempt. Donald Robertson and Jerin Biembongo each had an interception while Elijah Wallace had a tackle for a loss and a sack.
Puyallup begins league play with a dominant win to move to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in SPSL 4A North play. The Vikings will get a massive test next week when they host Sumner on Saturday at 7pm. Emerald Ridge drops to 1-3 with their third straight loss and 0-1 in league play. The Jaguars look to right the ship on Friday when they play at Spark Stadium in a road game against Rogers at 7pm.
