Capital 35, Timberline 20
(Lacey, WA) The Capital Cougars came away with a huge win on the road Friday night at Timberline. The two teams exchanged scores for the first quarter and a half. Timberline got it going with the first touchdown a 22 yard run by Keaton Thomas. The PAT failed but the Blazers held the first lead of the game 6-0.
The Cougars overcame a 4th and 10 and would plunge in from the 1 yard line with Patrick Halpin. The extra point ws good and the Cougs led 7-6.
The Blazers countered right back with a 9 yard pass strike to Asher Young but the extra point was no good and Timberline led by just 5.
The Cougars had the answer as Capital QB Cale Burkheimer locked in on Carter Armstrong for a 24 yard connection and pushed their lead to 14-12.
Capital then got one last chance in the 1st half when the officials put 2 seconds back on the clock that had run out for half time. Burkheimer dropped back and lobbed up a jump ball in the end zone and Carter Pennington went up and wrestled the ball away for another touchdown and went to the break with a 21-12 lead.
Capital would put the game away with a pair of rushing touchdowns from Halpin. Crashing in from the 3 and then a 12 yard run. The Cougs took a commanding 35-12 lead. The Blazers would score a late touchdown and added the 2-point conversion.
It would be too little, too late as the Cougars added a field goal and won the game handily 38-20. Cougars QB Cale Burkheimer was named the Thorbeckes MVP of the game.
Capital evened their conference record at 1-1 and are now 3-2 overall. Timberline has the same record of 1-1 and 3-2. Capital will host River Ridge next Friday, Timberline will be the visiting team at South Sound Stadium will take on North Thurston.
