Curtis Vikings 46, Emerald Ridge Jaguars 13

(University Place, WA) The SPSL-North is starting to take shape, but there’s still time for teams to play spoiler. The Emerald Ridge Jaguars were coming into the Thursday night matchup off a win against Rogers (Puyallup), while the Curtis Vikings were looking to remain unbeaten in SPSL play and defend their home turf on homecoming weekend. With the season already in week six, the division title might not be clinched this early, but it could be lost.

Curtis took the ball first and, despite a penalty before the first snap, drove down the field in just eight plays. Ryland Geldermann took a handoff from quarterback Samuel Patterson and broke through multiple Jaguar defenders for a 39-yard touchdown less than three minutes into the game. Emerald Ridge answered on their second offensive snap, as Brayden Paulino threw a pass to Amosa Masaniai, who galloped for 76 yards and the touchdown. The extra point was blocked as Curtis maintained a 7-6 lead. The Jaguars forced Curtis to punt on a three-and-out, but tried to go for it on fourth down and couldn’t pick up the first down, turning the ball over to the Vikings.

Curtis drove down the field with a 10-play drive, culminating in a six-yard touchdown run from Geldermann, early in the second quarter, to give the Vikings a 14-6 lead. Emerald Ridge put together a decent drive but was forced to punt. Curtis had the ball in good field position, near midfield, but on fourth down, couldn’t move the chains as Emerald Ridge took over on downs. The Jaguars used four plays of 10 yards or more to drive inside the Curtis red zone before Burke Shepard stepped in front of a pass at the goal line for the interception. With 1:39 left in the first half, Curtis started their drive at their own eight-yard line. Patterson led a quintessential two-minute drive to put the Vikings in field goal position. Luca Niebergall drilled a 40-yard field goal as time expired on the first half to put Curtis up 17-6 at the break.

Emerald Ridge began the second half with the ball and once again was moving the ball down the field. After picking up a first down, the Jaguars’ pass was deflected into the air and right into the hands of Curtis’s Tyce Kinley, who went the other way for a 54-yard pick-six. After Emerald Ridge was flagged for being offside, Curtis went for the two-point conversion and Kinley punched it in to make it a 25-6 Vikings lead. Emerald Ridge punted on their next possession, and Curtis took two plays to find paydirt again. Kinley and Patterson lined up next to each other in the shotgun, and before the snap, they shuffled to their right so Kinley took the direct snap. Kinley broke through the first wave of Jaguar defenders and bolted down the field for a 64-yard touchdown run to make it 32-6 with just under four minutes left in the third quarter.

The Curtis defense forced another turnover, and Shepard came up with his second interception of the ballgame. His return set the Vikings up at the 23-yard line, and in only four plays, Kinley scored for the third time in the quarter on a five-yard run to make it 39-6. Emerald Ridge punted on their next drive, but got the ball back one play later as Curtis fumbled and Damian Aguon recovered the loose ball for the Jags. Emerald Ridge turned it over on downs, and Curtis would use two big plays to get down to the one-yard line, where Langston Guien bulldozed into the end zone for a 46-6 Curtis lead. Emerald Ridge responded with a 50-yard touchdown run from Aiden Panlilio. That made it 46-13, and Curtis ran out the clock for a homecoming weekend victory.

Curtis improves to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in the SPSL-North. The Vikings travel to defending 4A State Champions, Sumner, next Friday before finishing out SPSL-North play against undefeated Puyallup at home.

Emerald Ridge drops to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in SPSL-North play. The Jaguars host South Kitsap next week and Sumner in two weeks before the Week 9 SPSL Crossover.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP went to Curtis’s sophomore, Tyce Kinley. Kinley had a hat trick of touchdowns, all in the third quarter, with the interception return for a touchdown and two rushing touchdowns to help lead his team to victory.

Curtis had great nights from Ryland Geldermann, whose two first-half touchdowns were pivotal in setting the tone for the night. Burke Shepard had a pair of interceptions and some nice returns on special teams, where he was close to breaking free for a touchdown. Rashaun Lavata’i was part of the stout defensive line for Curtis, as he and Jereme Scott Jr. made life difficult for the Emerald Ridge offense.

Emerald Ridge’s Moose Masaniai’s 76-yard catch and run was electric. Elijah Wallace had a sack on defense and had a good game defensively, and Jesus Sepulveda was buzzing around the field, making lots of tackles for the Jaguars.
