(Centralia, WA) It has been about eight years since the Tumwater Thunderbirds girls soccer team lost a match in the Evergreen 2A conference. Complete dominance since then has followed but the Centralia Tigers were looking to put a stop to that on Thursday night as the two teams wrapped up the first half of league play. Tumwater was looking to move to 5-0 in the conference while Centralia looked to avoid losing their third match in a row.
Tumwater 5, Centralia 0
Centralia came out of the gates fast and was very impressive in the opening 10 minutes. The Tigers controlled the ball fairly well and got a couple of nice runs into their attacking third. Izabella Hernandez played a large role in that attack with Eva Reinitz, Trinity Smith and Emma Ferch all helping push the T-Bird defense back and get them a little uncomfortable.
In the next 10 minutes, Tumwater then began to work into a groove. They emphasized ball control and crisp passing as they seemed to begin to work their way into the match. Sophie Boatright played the transition piece as the ball seemed to go her way when Tumwater looked to transition from defense to offense.
All of a sudden, Tumwater was in a groove. In the 20th minute, the T-Birds struck off the foot of senior Kayla Pope who fired a shot from far out perfectly into the back of the net to give the T-Birds a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. In the 24th minute, it would be Kennedy Riedl scoring on a perfect assist from Kayla Pope that was timed to perfection. Riedl added another in the 38th minute on almost the exact same play with another assist from Pope. A great header by Dina Silva saved the Tigers from allowing another goal but it was all Tumwater at halftime, 3-0.
A close slide tackle in the 18-yard box gave Tumwater a penalty shot in the 48th minute and of course it was Kayla Pope cashing in on it to make it 4-0. Centralia continued to play hard and make some offensive runs behind Hernandez as Cyndal Silla free kicks continue to be picture perfect every single time. However, the defense of Chloe Foos, Jenna Graves, Claire Buono, and Juliette Cash along with the goalkeeping of Wendy Ferrel was just too much. The T-Birds added one more on a perfectly placed free kick to give Kayla Pope the hat trick and Tumwater rolled to a 5-0 win.
Our Thorbeckes MVP of the match went to Kayla Pope for Tumwater. Pope had a hand in all five goals, scoring three of them for a hat trick and assisting on the other two scored by Kennedy Riedl. It was a dominant performance from the midfielder and just continues to show how deep the arsenal for the T-Birds truly is.
Tumwater rolls along and is now 6-3-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in EvCo 2A play. The T-Birds are off until Tuesday when they host the Aberdeen Bobcats at 7pm. Centralia drops their third in a row and now sit at 4-7 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Tigers look to snap their skid on Tuesday when they travel to Shelton at 7pm.
