The UFC heads to Philadelphia with two titles on the line and a card full of entertaining fighters and longtime UFC veterans. Both champions look to make their title defenses, with Mackenzie Dern taking on the dangerous Gillian Robertson and Islam Makhachev facing the Irishman Ian Machado Garry. Will Makhachev continue his all-time great legacy, or will there be a new champion in the welterweight division? Will Dern prove that she is the one to beat in the women’s strawweight? All questions will be answered come Saturday, August 15th. Here is a preview of UFC 330:
Edson Barboza vs Esteban Ribovics: Lightweight
Edson Barboza has been a fan favorite fighter for over a decade. He has some of the greatest knockouts in the sport, and he is renowned as the greatest kicker the company has seen. He is 24-14 overall and 18-14 in the UFC. Although he is a highlight machine, he is currently on a three-fight losing streak and looks to get back into the win column. He will be taking on Esteban Ribovics, who is 15-3 in his career and 4-3 in the UFC. Ribovics is also coming off a loss to Mateusz Gamrot, who is an elite fighter, and he believes that loss only sharpened his skill set coming into this fight. Experience is going to play a big role if Barboza gets the win, as he has lost some KO power but can still strike with anyone. Ribovics, on the other hand, is young and hungry, and will bring the fight to the veteran. It will be a great fight to start the main card no matter who walks out with the win.
Mansur Abdul-Malik vs Dustin Stoltzfus: Middleweight
Mansur Abdul-Malik has made a splash in the middleweight division in his young career as he sits at 9-1-1 and 3-1-1 in the UFC. He has never gone to a decision in his professional career, and he has heavy hands, with seven of his nine wins coming by knockout. He is set to face Dustin Stoltzfus, who is another veteran of the sport with a professional record of 16-8 and 3-7 in the UFC. Stoltzfus is on a two-fight losing streak coming into this fight and he now faces a very dangerous and hungry fighter in Abdul-Malik. This seems like one of those fights that doesn’t go the distance one way or another. It will be a test to see of Stoltzfus has done and seen enough in his career to take on the KO artist in front of him. A win for Abdul-Malik would get him one step closer to the middleweight rankings in his next couple of fights.
Jalin Turner vs Kaue Fernandes: Lightweight
“The Tarantula” Jalin Turner returns after close to nine months off to take on a young prospect in Kaue Fernandes. Fernandes is 11-2 in his career and 3-1 in the UFC. He is a well-rounded fighter but mostly gets his wins via knockout. While currently on a three-fight win streak, he looks forward to a potential ranked fight in the future if he can get past longtime journeyman Jalin Turner. Turner is 15-9 in his career and 8-6 in the UFC. He has faced many high-caliber fighters in the lightweight division in his career, including some fighters that have hovered around the top five rankings. Jalin is extremely lengthy for the weight class and is skilled on the feet. With his experience and skill set, he has some big advantages, but Fernandes has big power in his hands and Turner has been on the end of some bad knockouts in his last couple of fights. Another wild and entertaining fight on the card that could go either way.
Mackenzie Dern vs Gillian Robertson: Women’s Strawweight Title Fight
The first of two title fights on the night sees Mackenzie Dern in her first title defense since winning the belt at UFC 321 against Virna Jandiroba. Dern is one of the best grapplers in all of women’s MMA and is looking to continue her legacy as champion. She is 16-5 in her career and 11-5 in the UFC. She is a dangerous submission artist with 50% of her wins being by submission. She faces a very experienced fight though, in Gillian Robertson. Robertson is 17-8 in her career and 14-6 in the UFC. She is on a six-fight win streak and has earned her place in this championship setting. Robertson is seemingly the more well-rounded fighter, as she has many submission wins as well, but has more power in the hands than Dern does. This will likely be a grappling-heavy fight with many exchanges and reversals, and a submission from either fighter would not be shocking. Can Dern retain the belt or is there a new champ in the women’s strawweight division? Fans will have to see come Saturday.
Islam Makhachev vs Ian Machado Garry: Welterweight Title Fight
Many people already have Islam Makhachev on their greatest of all time list and for good reason. He has the most title defenses in lightweight history and is now a two-division champion at welterweight after his domination over Jack Della Maddalena in his last fight. He now looks to add another elite name to his resume in Ian Machado Garry. Islam is 28-1 in his career and on a 16-fight win streak. He has beaten many all-time greats with ease over the past five years, and he continues to do so in a new weight class. Ian Machado Garry believes that he has the tools to shock the world and dethrone the king of the UFC and pound-for-pound best fighter in the world.
Garry is 17-1 in his career and 10-1 in the UFC, with many impressive wins behind him as well. He is tall and lengthy with a great fight IQ, superb distance management, and good grappling as well. Islam is one of the best wrestlers in the company, and he is an extremely skilled striker as well, but he hasn’t fought someone the size of Ian Garry, as well as someone with Garry’s reach. Garry’s path to victory will be on the feet, whether it be by knockout or by point fighting. There are few men, if any, who can contend with Islam on the ground, but if Ian can keep distance and avoid the takedown, he will have a much better path to victory.
There have already been massive upsets this year that have turned the MMA world upside down, and you never know what could happen. It is not out of the realm of possibility that Garry pulls off what many consider to be a miracle. Truly, anything can happen in this sport, which is what makes it so great. This will be an outstanding fight no matter the outcome, and the MMA universe could be flipped depending on who wins. No one is invincible, and Ian Machado Garry looks to shock the world against one of the greatest fighters the sport has ever seen.
