The First Half
It didn’t take the Redhawks long to get on the board. Yeider Zuluaga continues to have an incredible season scoring his 7th goal of the season on an assist from Ismael Yeo just a minute and a half into the match. That early goal seemed to wake up the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga picked up the pace of the game, filtering the ball through Morgan Olson, Alex Bazia and Robbie Mora in the middle of the field. Seattle U’s back line held strong with goalkeeper Charlie Lanphier making some big saves and several players throwing themselves in front of shots.
The Bulldogs evened the game in the 34th minute on a shot from distance by Robbie Mora that caught the home team off guard. He had sent several passes early so when the defense backed off he planted and fired for his 3rd goal of the season.
The score at halftime was 1-1 but the Redhawks trailed the Bulldogs in shots (5-9) and shots on goal (4-2) . Each team had 2 corners and Seattle U had the possession advantage at 55%.
Halftime Seattle U 1 Gonzaga 1
The halftime break gave the Redhawks a spark and they came out much calmer and crisper. Zuluaga struck 2 times just minutes apart. His second goal of the match came in the 62nd and was spectacular. After receiving a pass from Patrick Kearney he faked a shot with the right foot, chopped the ball sideways to get the defender to go by planted and finished with a left footed shot.
In the 64th off a free kick just outside of the 18 yard box Zuluaga tapped the ball to Edgar Leon who stepped on the top and then Yeider blasted it home completing the hat trick. Zuluaga is currently tie for first in the WCC in goals (9) and points (23) with Oregon State’s Arnau Farnos.
The Bulldogs didn’t just roll over, they came roaring back. In the 70th minute a misplaced pass by Seattle U was taken by Morgan Olson who’s pass to Drew Pedersen was quickly shuffled to Alex Bazia for the finish cutting into the lead.
Olson assisted Drew Pedersen in the 83rd for the final goal of the match and earned the Bulldogs a 3-3 tie with Seattle U.
