Olympia 27, South Kitsap 0

(Olympia, WA) The Olympia Bears were looking for a strong finish in the SPSL 4A crossover when they hosted South Kitsap. The Bears came in with a 3-2 SPSL South division record and 4-4 overall. A win would clinch a top 32 position and advance the Bears to the round of 32 a loss would have put them on the edge.

The same could be said for the Wolves who were hoping to advance to postseason play for the first time under Head Coach Sean Banks who has been working to turn the Wolves around.

As the game began under rain and wind at Olympia’s Ingersoll stadium neither team could really get much going with a 0-0 game after the 1st quarter and it wouldn’t be until just 4 minutes remained in the half before one of the teams broke through. Olympia scored on a Tucker Downing 2 yard QB run. The PAT was good and the Bears led 7-0 which held up to halftime.

This game would come down to the 2nd half and which team would take control. Olympia coach Nick Mullen apparently got through to his squad as they came out with a massive defensive effort finishing off the 1st half shut out. Meantime, the offense started clicking and the Bears were able add to the 7-0 lead with an 11 yard pass from Downing to Canon Betts for a 14-0 lead.

The Wolves definitely pulled out all the stops offensively with a fake field goal at the end of the 1st half and going for it on 4th down twice in the 2nd half along with a critical fumble.

The Bears took advantage to put the game away in the final 12-minutes. Downing found Sam Rigg on a 3rd and long from the 26 just seconds into the 4th quarter for a 3 score lead. The Bears would ice the game about halfway through the final quarter with another TD pass from Downing this time to Ibrahima Diallo for 15 yards pushing the score to 27-0 and that’s how it would end.

The Bears finish 4-2 in league and 5-4 overall and are #25 in the RPI. South Kitsap drops to 2-4 in league and 5-4 overall. The loss did drop them but were the 32nd team in the RPI.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game award went to defender Braydon Cook who finished the game with a sack and 5 tackles for losses. Cook and Oly defense were simply brilliant pitching the shut out and allowing the offense to have time to get in a groove.
