PUYALLUP, WASH
The Bonney Lake Panthers have surprised many in the South Puget Sound League. Few may have expected Bonney Lake to jump out of the gate to a 12-0 start. However, on Saturday night, the Panthers rallied down nine in the second half to hand the Puyallup Vikings their first loss at home since February of 2024 in a 51-41 win.
Bonney Lake with the win vaults to 13-0 and 9-0 in SPSL play. Puyallup falls to 8-4 overall and a 7-2 SPSL record.
This was a rematch of last year’s SPSL Semifinal won by Puyallup 67-50.
The game began with Keenan Perry scoring the first five point of the game to give the visiting Panthers a 5-0 lead. Puyallup reeled in the lead with scoring contributions from Lawson Looker and Will Nasinec. Puyallup led 13-10 after the first quarter.
Many expected the game to be a standoff that would be neck and neck. The second quarter certainly was such. Jane Andino and Keenan Perry supplied scoring for Bonney Lake while Puyallup’s Bennett Hedman scored a buzzer beater to close out the first half to punctuate a 28-26 Puyallup halftime lead.
Puyallup stretched their lead to nine in the third quarter, going on a 7-0 run to open the half. However, the game began to turn when Puyallup’s Will Nasinec got into foul trouble. Bonney Lake capitalized with Puyallup forced to make adjustments defensively.
Puyallup led 35-34 after three quarters. Bonney Lake began to pull away with taking the lead early in the fourth quarter and not looking back. A huge reason for that success was Robert Mosley IV. His pair of three-pointers padded the lead for Bonney Lake, but placed them in the driver’s seat. Keenan Perry ended up icing the game for Bonney Lake to put the Panthers up by 12 to seemingly end the game. Bonney Lake after trailing 35-26, went on a 25-6 scoring run to win the game.
In the end, the 51-41 victory for Bonney Lake gives the Panthers a 9-0 record in the SPSL South. Bonney Lake hosts Curtis next Tuesday before traveling on Thursday to face SPSL unbeaten Emerald Ridge.
Puyallup next week visits Spanaway Lake on Tuesday before hosting Olympia on Thursday.
Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP was Robert Mosley IV with his quartet of three’s including two in the fourth quarter with the game in the balance.
