Lance McGee, out of Sumner High School, has flipped his commitment from Oregon State University to Washington State. McGee has stood out all year as one of, if not the, best running backs in the state of Washington, and he solidified that honor with his performance at the 4A state championship game against Lake Stevens in a 41-35 overtime victory. In that game, he tallied 44 carries for 354 yards and 6 touchdowns. He scored 36 points himself that night and broke the record for most touchdowns in a 4A state championship game by one player and the most touchdowns scored with six. Those six touchdowns also tied Lance Allarde’s total record for total 11-man football touchdowns, which was set last year in Royal’s 1A championship victory. The scary part is that he might be just as good a linebacker as he is a running back.

In his senior year, he rushed for 2,489 yards with 42 touchdowns. Time and time again, he has proven to be unstoppable with the ball in his hands, and he proved it on the grandest stage in the state championship. One of the all-time great performances in a state title game against one of the most talented teams in the state, Lake Stevens. This earned him the honor of being the 4A state player of the year. The perfect way to end the high school career of one of the best running backs the state has seen in a long time.

On Sunday (January 11th), McGee announced that he has committed to Washington State University to join new head coach Kirby Moore. He had previously planned to attend the PAC-2 rival in Oregon State and had a close connection to the former OSU head coach, Trent Bray. Bray was fired from OSU, and on that same day, McGee decommitted. Bray took a defensive coordinator position at WSU, which was likely the final decision maker on McGee heading to Pullman.

It is unknown whether Lance will play at running back or linebacker in his first year at WSU. At the moment, there are three returners for the Cougars in their RB room, including Kirby Vorhees, Maxwell Woods, and Leo Pulalasi. This would likely put the offensive production from McGee on hold as he works his way up. On the other hand, the linebacker room has space for another enforcer, which the Sumner star could fill with ease. Either way, WSU had landed one of the most dynamic players in the state who can play both offense and defense at an elite level and can elevate their team in a major way. A huge pickup for the Cougars, who have already put in a lot of work to revamp their team with Kirby Moore at the helm.
