Clover Park 72, Fife 52
(Lakewood, WA) This was the battle for the SPSL 2A boys league lead with the Fife Trojans leading with an 8-1 league mark and Clover Park just behind at 7-2. The Trojans and Timberwolves faced off on December 16 with Fife pulling off a 1 point, 44-43 win.
1st Quarter
The Fife Trojans got off to a fast start running out to a 7-2 lead just 90-seconds into the game. The Trojans were looking to open up on the T-Wolves but C-P wasn’t having it.
The offense led by team scoring leader Marshall Scott who finished off a 9-0 run with a thundering dunk by Scott to take an 11-7 lead. Clover Park led by Scott continued to pull away with a 21-12 lead after the 1st quarter. Colin Boykin and Trey-David Lunnie added to the offensive attack.
2nd Quarter
The Trojans’ Noah Choi got things rolling quickly dropping a 3-ball to pull within 6 with the first score of the 2nd quarter. Unfortunately, the quick burst of offense was short lived and wouldn’t add another bucket until less than 4-minutes to play and scored their final with 1:45 mark for just 7 points for the quarter.
Meantime, the Timberwolves kept pushing the gas pedal with a more balanced attack as Scott hit for 6 and had 26 for the half. Quincy Williams and Jakhi Pegram both got into the scorebook as well as the T-Wolves led big 40-19 at the break.
3rd Quarter
Clover Park began where they left off scoring their 16th point of the quarter with 2:45 to go and stretched that lead to a massive 56-22 and started to push the running clock. Scott added 4 more points and he got the rest of the offense including Ijohn Taylor and Michael Simpson.
The Trojans refused to give in and shut down the T-Wolves while finishing the 3rd on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit from 34 to 22. Devaughn Smith, Micah Mittelstaedt and Jayden Bjorkman all scored in the late run.
4th Quarter
Fife continued their run as they closed the gap all the way down to 13 points, shaving 21 points off that 34 point lead. Choi triggered a late run with his second 3 ball. Cruz Carillo, Taylor Bjorkman and Oziah Troupe gave the Trojans a chance.
Clover Park finally snapped out of their late game slumber when Taylor drained a 3 with 1:59 to play to push the lead back to 16 and the Timberwolves would go on to post the 72-52 win.
Standings and What’s next?
With the win, the Timberwolves pull into a 1st place tie with Fife as both are now 8-2 in league play. Clover Park is now 13-4 overall and will next travel to Washington on Friday night.
Fife drops to 11-5 on the season and will host Orting on Friday.
Sumner Holiday Inn MVP
Marshall Scott knocked down 30 points and that will be more than enough to earn the MVP. Ijohn Taylor and Colin Boykin both had great games as well for Clover Park. Had Fife pulled off the win Devaughn Smith and Cruz Carillo would have been considered.
