(Conroe, TX) The Saint Martin’s Saints Softball team, after upsetting #1 and two-time defending National Champions, UT-Tyler, took the field on Saturday and Sunday for three games to round out the First Pitch Invitational.
The first game on Saturday came against Angelo State, and the teams lit up the scoreboard in the first inning. Saint Martin’s in the top half of the first put up four runs. Shelby Lawson and Alyssa Umemoto each had an RBI single, while Taylor Orgeles had a two-RBI double. Angelo State countered with a five-run inning to lead 5-4. Saint Martin’s tied it up on a Kaylee Walker RBI single in the top of the second, but Angelo State scored in the second and fifth innings to win it 7-5 and give Saint Martin’s their first loss of the season.
The second Saturday game saw the Saints pinned against Texas A&M International. Saint Martin’s led off the game with two runs in the top of the first as Shelby Lawson had an RBI double and Amanda Peterson drove in Lawson on an RBI single. Kaylee Walker had an RBI double in the fourth inning to give Saint Martin’s a 3-0 lead. Alyssa Umemoto smashed a solo home run in the sixth inning as the Saints led 4-0. Saint Martin’s scored twice in the seventh inning on errors, and Texas A&M International got two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Saints held on for a 6-2 victory.
Today, the Saints took on St. Mary’s (TX) for their fifth and final game of the First Pitch Invitational. The Saints had a huge second inning, scoring five runs. Haley Agena had an RBI single to start the scoring. Kaylee Walker followed up with an RBI single of her own. Agena scored on a wild pitch, and Taylor Orgeles knocked in two runs with a single to cap off the big inning. Shelby Lawson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third inning, which allowed Emilee Morris to score. In the fifth inning, Analise Griffiths walked with the bases loaded, allowing Kaslyn Watanabe to score. Faith Prosch also drew a bases-loaded walk to allow Haley Agena to come home as the Saints went on to win 8-0 in five innings.
Saint Martin’s starts the year 4-1 and will play in the Stanislaus State Invitational in Stanislaus, California, on February 13-15.
