#12 Camas Papermakers 63, #10 Puyallup Vikings 62 (OT)

(Puyallup WA) The Camas Papermakers and Puyallup Vikings squared off in a loser-out game, with both teams hoping to keep their seasons alive. Camas had already defeated an SPSL team on the road this tournament, knocking off Olympia in the first round, while Puyallup had one loser-out game victory under its belt, by winning on Saturday. Something had to give in what would prove to be a thriller.

The first quarter was a track meet, with both teams flying up and down the floor. Five different Puyallup players scored while Camas was led by Lila McCarthy, who had six points in the quarter to help give the Papermakers a 16-15 lead after one. Camas repeated their offensive output from the first, this time led by Lauren Hood, who had seven points, and Eliana Gibson, who had six points. The Papermakers took a seven-point lead, 32-25, at the halftime break.

Puyallup came surging out of halftime, with the most potent quarter of the game, putting up 22 points with the help of Ellinor Meyer, who had eight points, and Chloe Gage, who had six points in the quarter. The duo outscored Camas alone in the quarter as Puyallup led 47-44 after three quarters of intense action. The fourth quarter was back and forth, with each team following up clutch shot after clutch shot. Puyallup’s Jaycee Kemp was superb coming off the bench for the Vikings, and hit a pair of shots in the paint while Lauren Hood took over for Camas late, hitting multiple late baskets and tied the game up at 59 apiece. Neither team could break the tie for the final minute and a half of regulation, and the sides lined up for overtime.

In overtime, the first half of the extra session was scoreless as both defenses continued to shine down the stretch. Puyallup’s Adriana Adams hit a free throw to break the tie and put the Vikings up 60-59 with 1:39 left. With 45 seconds left, Camas went back to Lauren Hood as she drew contact and hit two free throws to give Camas the lead at 61-60. Camas stole the ball right after the inbounds, but fired a quick three and missed. There was a scramble for the ball, forcing a jump ball, and the possession arrow pointed to Puyallup. The Vikings went to Laney Weaver, who drove down the lane and dished a perfect pass to Jaycee Kemp, who tucked it in to give Puyallup a 62-61 lead. Camas called their last timeout with 8.4 seconds left to set up a season-defining play. The Papermakers inbounded for Hood, who sprinted down the floor with a Puyallup defender all over her. Just two steps inside the half-court line, Hood looked up to see Mackenzie Kvistad underneath the basket and delivered a perfect pass. Kvistad gathered and banked it in with two seconds left to give Camas the 63-62 victory, as time ran out on Puyallup’s inbound attempt.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP went to Camas junior, Lauren Hood, who led the game with 24 points and had the perfect pass on the final play to Mackenna Kvistad for the game-winning basket.

Camas was also led by Eliana Gibson, who had 14 points, Baylie Farra had 10 points, Mackenna Kvistad had seven points, including the game-winning basket, Lila McCarthy had six points, and Jada Tatieze had two points.

Puyallup was led by Chloe Gage, who had 16 points to lead the Vikings. Laney Weaver had 13 points, Ellinor Meyer and Jaycee Kemp each had 11 points, Isabel Ostrander had six points, and Adriana Adams had five points.

Camas will face #9 Bonney Lake in a winner-to-State game on Saturday at Auburn HS at 10 AM. The Papermakers will be attempting to make their ninth consecutive State Tournament appearance. Puyallup’s season ends at 15-10.
