(Lakewood, WA) The USGA held a U.S. Senior Open Final Qualifier at Oakbrook Golf Club. Three spots were up for grabs as the players who advanced from Final Qualifying will head to Columbus, Ohio, and play at Scioto Country Club for the 46th U.S. Senior Open.
Taking medalist honors was a tie at the top between Canada’s Matthew Daniel and Palm Desert, California’s Warren Pineo. Both players shot four-under rounds of 67 to share the top spot. The pair each shot two-under rounds of 34 on the first nine and two-under rounds of 33 on the second nine, while each player made just one bogey and recorded five birdies on the round. Tualatin, Oregon’s Chad Fribley shot a three-under round of 68 to finish solo third and take the final qualifying spot. Fribley was on fire on the first nine, going five-under in his first five holes, highlighted by an eagle on the first hole. Fribley birdied the 10th hole to get to six-under, but bogeyed four of the last six holes to shoot two-over on the second nine, and was two shots clear of a playoff.
Sandpoint, Idaho’s Jeff Gove will be the first alternate, and Blaine, Washington’s Jeff Coston is the second alternate, with both players shooting one-under rounds of 70.
The first hole was the easiest hole, playing 0.4 strokes under par, with an average score of 4.59. There were two eagles, the only two eagles of the day, eight birdies, and no bogeys on the par-5. The hardest hole was the par-4 12th hole, which played well over half a stroke over par. The average score was 4.66, with only one birdie made and 17 bogeys or worse. The first nine were easier than the second, with an average score of 36.90 on the front and 37.31 on the back.
