Shorewood got on the board in the 30th minute on a penalty kick taken by Nikola Genadiev. The rest of the match was back and forth with both teams having good chances to score. A late equalizer goal by Max Ames set up by Bishop Blanchet’s Jack Healy forced the match to overtime. After two scoreless overtime periods the game was decided by a shootout. Shorewood had backup junior goalkeeper Maxwell Smith in goal for the shootout. Bishop Blanchet stuck with starter Ashton Mazza in goal. Smith blocked the 2nd Bears shooter for the lone save and sent the Stormrays to back to back the State Championship matches.
Shorewood’s Caleb Butler was named our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP for his stellar defense in the match and the shootout winning goal.
Bishop Blanchet plays Gig Harbor for 3rd place at 12:15 Saturday afternoon.
Shorewood gets a rematch of last years State title match with Mercer Island at 6:30 Saturday night.

Bishop Blanchet last made the state tournament in 2012 and that was a 1st round knockout. The last time the Bears placed at state was 3rd back in 2006. Overall Bishop Blanchet has 4 state boys soccer trophies the 3rd in 06 a 4th in 2000 and a pair of Championships from 1980 and 1974. The Championship in 1980 was over their final 4 opponents in Shorewood.

Shorewood played in the state title game last year losing to Mercer Island 3-2. This year the Stormrays are unbeaten and looking to get wins over 2 teams they lost titles too. With 15 returning players from last year’s team Shorewood is looking to take the next step. In their program history they have 5 trophies the 2 seconds and 2 fourths from 2014 and 1987. The Stormrays won a State Title in 1978. How will the Shorewood vengeance tour 2026 turn out?

Mercer Island’s Bridge Gerry scored a 6th minute goal to give the Islanders an early lead. Mattias Perrenoud added a 2nd goal just moments before the halftime whistle blew. Dylan Hall headed home a Tyler Shelton cross for the final goal of the match.
Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Junior midfielder Zach Hyman for his never ending motor and dominant play.

Gig Harbor last made the state tournament in 2024 but it ended in a 2nd round loss to Lake Washington. The Tides have the most appearances in the tournament but are the only final 4 team that hasn’t won a title. They have two 3rd place trophies from 2017 and 2003. Is this the year the Tides roll to a Championship?

Mercer Island is looking to defend their State Title from last season. The beat #2 seed Shorewood last season will there be a round 2? Of the 4 teams in the 3A tournament the Islanders are the most decorated with 3 third place trophies from 09,08 and 06. The Islanders are no strangers to the title game but in those matches they have a 2-4 record. Besides last year’s title they won it all in 2022. They took 2nd in 16,14,12 and 01. With 10 players back from last season’s team will they add a 3rd Golden Ball to the trophy case?
