(Auburn, WA) Saturday was day 2 of the Muckleshoot Gold Cup Indian Relays and another round of qualifying was on tap. To check out the results and race replays of the Gold Cup races click on this link.
Meantime, on the thoroughbred side of racing there were 8 races and some good racing. Trainer Tom Wenzel got his 500th Emerald Downs Victory, Kevin Krigger is surging in the jockey standings and Tim McCanna is not going anywhere atop the trainer standings.
Once again, special thanks to Vince Bruun, Emerald’s Media Director for his reporting. This week has been a bit tough personally, so we’re getting out as much coverage as possible and Vince, Cy Labar in the TV room, Joe Withee, Reid Palmer, Gary Dougherty, Phil Ziegler and the Emerald crew all are very gracious with their time and always willing to share information or let me copy and paste in many cases their materials.
Let’s get to Saturday’s report.
Track Notes:

Here are the Saturday race re-caps and replays.
7th Race, Feature Race the Muckleshoot Resort Purse
Heavily-favored Lapush asserted her class Saturday at Emerald Downs, powering to a 3 ¼-length victory over Above Average in the $23,000 Muckleshoot Casino Resort Purse for older fillies and mares.

With the victory, trainer Tom Wenzel became only the seventh trainer in track history to win 500 races while boosting his season win percentage to a sparkling 50 percent (9 for 18). Wenzel also shares the record for most Emerald Downs’ stakes wins with Doris Harwood at 67 apiece and can make history when the track launches its 20-race stakes schedule June 21.
Despite her 7 for 13 lifetime mark, Lapush had never been a betting favorite before Saturday. Off at odds of 4 to 5, the 5-year-old mare was patiently ridden by Frank Alvarado, finally surging to the lead past mid-stretch and drawing off to win convincingly in 1:10.29 for six furlongs.
Owned by Round Table Stable, Lapush earned $13,110, upping her life mark to $131,560. She thrives at six furlongs, sporting a 4-0-1 record in five starts at the distance.
Wenzel, a fixture at Emerald Downs the last 30 years, saddled his first winner here July 1, 1996, 4-year-old gelding Olympic Charlie performing the honors with Vann Belvoir in the saddle.
For Alvarado, the victory was his third on the card and upped his career total to 4,141.
Above Average, off at odds of 10-1, held second while Tiger Lady, Clubhouse Drama, and Simply Gracious rounded out the order of finish. Mischievous Emma and Miss Dynamic were scratched earlier in the day.
