(Auburn, WA) The Jackpot Pick 6 pool ballooned to $42,000 on Saturday after a 37k acrryover from Friday and there was a single winner. The ticket was sold at Emerald Downs and the man who handicapped the winning ticket is the guy giving out picks before every race, longtime Publicity Director Joe Withee.

Withee’s broadcast partner handicapper John Lindley also had a huge day as an owner. Lindley saw his 1st time starter win a big maiden special weight race.

In the feature, Slew’s Tiz Whiz delighted the crowd with a hard running neck win over the speedy Cap It Daddy in Saturday’s feature. A warm-up to the prestigious Longacres Mile in 2 weeks.

Cruz Starts Fast

Alex Cruz got off to a fast start winning both ends of the opening daily double. Both races ended up being just 4 horse fields and he came from last to 1st in the opener on 9-5 Savita and then went gate to wire on 12-1 Simonsito in the 2nd. The all Cruz double paid well for 2 4 horse field returning $35.50.

Cruz then finished 2nd in the 3rd race on Bluegrass Lent then tripled in the 4th winning on 1st time starter Spicy Coronarita.

1st Time Starters win back-to-back

A pair of 2 year-old maiden races set up the 4th and 5th races. In the 4th Spicy Coronarita won by 12 lengths with Alex Cruz aboard for owners Steve Haarh and John Perry for trainer Melissa Ledford and was the 2nd favorite at 2-1. This was a $25,000 claiming event and the comnnections were hopoing to get her thr0ugh as a 1st time starter but they lost her as trainer Frank Lucarelli liked what he saw and dropped the tag on Spicy prior to the race.

In the 5th no chance of losing your runner here in a maiden special weight. 12-1 Bolt Action Beau was overlooked and Isaias Enriquez went gate to wire from the 1 hole to win for Greener Pastures Stable and trainer Frank Lucarelli.

The 1 path was tough on Saturday

The rail was especially fast on Saturday not just for front speed but for closers who found the rail. In the 8 races there were 7 with a #1 as #1 was scratched in the 1st. Of those 7 races #1 won 5 times.

It began in the 2nd with 12-1 Simonsito with Alex Cruz. Thewy broke from the 1 hole and in the stretch looked like odds-on favorite Convey to Me was going to sweep past the upset minded Simonsito but could not losing by a head.

In the 3rd race #1 Lucky Code with Blake Nunnally went to the lead and looked like the stalkers would have a say at the 1/4 pole but instead  Lucky Code re-broke to win by 7.

In the 4th 1st time starter and Alex Cruz came out of the 5 gate but inside the quarter pole blew by early speed Express Girl and blew the field away to win by 11 lengths on the inside part of the track.

The 5th went to 1st time starter and #1 Bolt Action Beau with Isaias Enriquez going to the front and the 12-1 outsider just kept going as the favorites threated coming down the middle of the stretch but Beau was on the inside and did not stop.

The 6th race #1 Eddiecoyle with Kevin Krigger stalked in 2nd but never left rail got 1st run to take the lead and denied all comers for a hard fought neck victory.

In the feature, Slew’s Tiz Whiz piloted by Frank Alvarado was #1, never left the rail and closed to win by a head. More on that ride in the Feature race re-cap below.

Then in the finale, 12-1 #6 Golden Regal stunned the two big favorites with a heady ride from Talliyah Timentwa when she dove to the inside when Tigersun started to tire and drift out at about the 16th pole. Timentwa got to the inside and rolled on by for the win.

The inside was hot on Saturday to say the least.

7th Race Feature Race The Muckleshoot Casino Resort Purse

One of the track’s all-time greats delivered another superior performance as Slew’s Tiz Whiz collared Cap It Daddy for a neck victory in Saturday’s $25,000 Muckleshoot Casino Resort Purse for 3-year-olds and up.

Perfectly ridden by Frank Alvarado, Slew’s Tiz Whiz ran the mile in 1:36.19, returning $4.68 as the public betting choice. Tom Wenzel is the trainer for Slew’s Crew Racing.

Alvarado said he knew the rail was playing very fast today with several #1’s winning so he did not want to have to swing wide in the stretch. “If I go wide, I lose.” Alvarado instead did not get back to far and although in last  was only 4-5 lengths behind. Turning for home Alvarado said he saw his chance, “a gap was there for us to get to the rail and when I asked he responded like the Champion he is and got it done.”

An 8-year-old Washington-bred, Slew’s Tiz Whiz improved to 13-7-6 in 33 career starts—all at Emerald Downs. He earned $14,250 to boost his career total to $435,262, good for fifth on the track’s all-time list and 19th all-time among Washington-bred runners.

Next stop for Slew’s Tiz Whiz is the $125,000 Longacres Mile on Aug. 16, a race he won in 2022 and finished third in both 2023 and 2024. Nominations for the 91st Mile close 2 p.m. Sunday. Alvarado said he hope’s to be right back in the winners circle in two weeks.

For Slew’s Tiz Whiz, Saturday’s victory was his first of 2026 following a second in the $50,000 Governor’s Stakes and thirds in the $50,000 Budweiser Stakes and a $25,000 allowance tilt.

Cap It Daddy did everything but win the race, setting fractions of :23.90, :47.46 and 1:11.70, before yielding grudgingly to the winner. The 4-year-old Dads Caps gelding has been razor-sharp at the meeting, finishing second twice to Chuckanut Bay before defeating that one at 6 ½ furlongs three weeks ago. Saturday’s effort marker his first attempt at a two-turn race.

Veritas Aequitas was 2 ¼ lengths back in third place with He’s Not Talking and Rondelito rounding out the order of finish.

1st Race

After a late scratch left 4 to go 6 furlongs and a patient ride from Alex Cruz saw Savita sit last then sweung out to the middle of the stretch and ran by all three in front for the win in a final time of 1:11.55. Savita races for Mike Phillips and Alan Bozell and trained by Bozell. Savita ks a Washington bred by Cupid out of Unifier by Deputy Minister and was bred by Greg and Teresa Luce.

Drewy with Kevin Krigger had the lead but could not resist Savita in the end, Janey and Silvio Amador flattened out in deep stretch to be 3rd and Betty Lute stopped after early speed.

Note there was no show betting with the 4 horse field.

2nd Race

2 late scratches in this one dropped the field to 4 and Alex Cruz this time on 12-1 Simonsito went to the lead while 1-5 odds on choice Convey to me sat back in 3rd. Turning for home Convey to Me made a bold move and engaged Simonsito but Cruz saved another gear and simply would not let Convey to Me get by to win by a head in a time of 1:04.32 for 5 1/2 furlongs. Simonsito races for Joseph Budanich and is trained by Shelly Crowe.

Convey to Me was a clear 2nd, Lord of Light closed to be 3rd under Blake Nunnally and Morro Morro ridden by Allyssa Morales was 4th.

3rd Race

The field of 5 went a mile and the front end is where Lucky Code went right from the gate. Jockey Blake Nunnally managed the pace perfectly and when the stalkers came calling Nunnally gave Code a little tap and the 6-year-old gelding expanded his lead cruising to the win in a final time of 1:37.05. Lucky Code races for Free Brook Racing and trained by Scott Freeman.

Bluegrass Lent ran 2nd and Alex Cruz got close to opening the day with a triple, Creative Union ridden by Kevin Orozco was 3rd and completing the top 4 was Lert’s Go Champ in the saddle was Frank Alvarado.

4th Race 

After a late scratch 5 2-year-olds went 5 furlongs and Spicy Coronarita showed her stuff in her career debut. Jockey Alex Cruz and Spicy broke 2nd just off her stablemate Express Girl with Silvio Amador. About halfway around the turn Cruz pressed go and Spicy Coronarita drew off to win by maybe a dozen lengths in the final time of 58.29. Jess Mo Money and Lenny Seecharan was second best in this one with betting choice Saint Indie running on for 3rd and Express Girl tired for 3rd.

Spicy Coronarita races for Steve Haarh and John Perry and trained by Melissa Ledford. The 2-year-old filly is a Washington bred by Coast Guard out of Perfect Promise by Abraaj and was bred by the owners.

5th Race

Another 1st time starter showed they were ready to run at first asking when Bolt Action Beau popped out of the gate from the 1 post and went to the lead. Jockey Isaias Enriquez allowed Beau to settle in setting fractions of 21.98 and then slowing it down to a 45.63. Turning for home Gottherizz and Adrian Castellanos came roaring down the middle of the stretch bu Bolt Action Beau had too much left easily holding off the Rizz for the win in a final time of 1:04.53. Gottherizz was 2nd, favorite Kraken Up finished 3rd with Kevin Krigger in the saddle and Cape Royal under Silvio Amador was 4th.

6th Race

A field of 7 went 6 furlongs and Eddiecoyle was sent out of the 1 hole by Kevin Krigger but was met by Oneonta and Talliyah Timentwa for the lead. The duo set a hot pace of 21.49 and 44.44. Turning for home longshot Coastal Journey ridden by Allyssa Morales and Kris’s Gold with Alex Cruz laid down the challenge but Eddiecoylde would not give in and denied the closer for the win. Eddiecoyle races for owner and trainer Tim McCanna and stopped the clock in 1:10.55.

Coastal Journey at 19-1 took 2nd with Kris’s Gold 3rd and Oneonta held on to complete the superfecta.

8th Race

With $42,000 hanging in the balance, those pick 6 bettors were not alive did not want to see a longshot light up the board giving an opening for someone to swoop in with the single ticket to hog the whole jackpot.

It looked like one of the two favorites were in great position to push the carryover to a higher number but as odds-on Kyalam with Silvio Amador and 8-5 Tigersun under Adrian Castellanos turned for home the early pace and a fierce headwind took it’s toll.

One other runner had been making some nice progress in Golden Regal with Talliyah Timentwa and was in the middle of the stretch in 3rd.

First Kyalam faded and would finish 3rd. and as Golden Regal was making progress Tigersun was in control but then began tire and drifted out. At about the 16th pole Timentwa cut to the inside of Tigersun with Golden Regal and go to the rail which was lighting fast all day and rolled on by for a length victory in a final time of 1:03.77 for 5 1/2 furlongs. Joe and Gloria Russo were the winning owners and Patty Leaney the winning trainer.

Giant Impact and Alex Anaya finished 4th with Shiny Orb piloted by Allyssa Morales completed the Super Hi 5.
