(Auburn, WA) The Corgi World Championship weekend began on Friday night with the 1st leg of the Daffodil Sweet Sprint Series. Jody Peetze added $26,000 for two sprint series, one for boys, the Hollywood Harbor Sprint Series and for the girls the Daffodil Sweet.

Daffodil Sweet

Each series is a 2 race series and begins with $3,500 claimers. To run in the 2nd race of the series you had to have run in the 1st leg. Peetz added $6,000 to each of the 4 races to raise the purses to $15,000.

There is an extra $1,000 for the boys Champion and for the girls Champ. To win the Championship it is a points system with 3 for a win, 2 points for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Top points earner wins the bonus. If there is a tie, Peetze says she will add another $1,000 so the bonus money will not be split, each would get a thousand dollar bonus.

Daffodil Sweet Leg 1 Winner

5-1 Union Coach allowed Sin a Happy Song to roll off blazing fractions of 21.67 and 44.83 then made her move at the top of the stretch. Jockey Alex Cruz with a patient ride got first run and rolled to an easy 3+ length win. This gives owners Rancho Viejo and Jerry Carmody along with trainer Rigoberto Velasquez the lead in the Daffodil Sweet series.

Nan Elizabeth closed from far back for Kevin Orozco to claim 2nd and 9-5 favorite Ginger in Charge under Adrian Castellanos settled for 3rd.

From the Saddle

Coming into Friday night Silvio Amador topped the jockey standings with 28 wins followed by the defending champ Kevin Krigger with 25 victories. Adrian Castellanos was 3rd and the 3rd rider with 20 or more wins at 20. Blake Nunnally has 15 wins in 4th place and is one of only 4 jockeys with double digit wins.

Kevin Krigger

Friday night, Krigger got started quickly with a dominating win in the 1st on Bull Tiz. In race 2 Krigger went from 1-5 to 5-1 and it didn’t matter crushing the field by 5 lengths on Miss Union and Krigger was within 1 of tying Amador.

Krigger went for 3 in a row in the 3rd and came up a neck short as Frank Alvarado timed his front running win perfectly.

Karlo Lopez snapped a bit of a dry spell, Lopez is a regular on the tote board but has struggling to get a win lately but a wire-to-wire win on West Coast Bull hs him back in the win column.

Allyssa Morales got her win song played after the 5th with a nice stalking won on Regarding Harry.

Former 5-time Emerald riding Champ Alex Cruz has been hitting the board but wins haven’t come as easily as the places and shows got a huge win with a heady ride in the Daffodil Sweet Sprint Series. Cruz is now 7-10-13 on the year.

And Blake Nunnally wrapped up the night with a last to 1st sling shot win.

From the Barn

Tim McCanna has led from the 2nd race on opening day and held a 3 win advantage over a group of 4 tied for 2nd in the trainer standings. McCanna had 13 wins while Frank Lucarelli, Howie Gibson, Jorge Rosales and Tom Wenzel were all even with 10 wins. Wenzell leads all trainers though in the count they all would like to win in earnings with 172k in the bank so far.

Rigoberto Velasquez

Blaine Wright a perenial contender but so far this year he’s had a bit of seconditis with 7 wins and 9 2nds. But Wright’s powerful barn is stalking the others right now and he’s 3rd in the money earned standings about 300 bucks short of Lucarelli with both banking more than 146k.

McCanna quickly added to his lead pushing it to 4 with his 14th win of the season in the 1st trace with Bull Tiz. McCanna also owned Bull Tiz.

Other winning conditioners on the night included Steve Henson getting his 3rd win of the meet and coming off an impressive win in the Auburn Stakes last Sunday. Henson scored in the 2nd race with Miss Union. In the 3rd race Debbie Peery got her 4th victory of the season with front runner Flash that Smile. Steve Bullock tallied his 2nd win of the season in the 4th with West Coast Bull, Jim Gilmour won the 5th with favorite Regarding Harry.

Jesse Velasquez got the big win in the Daffodil Sweet Sprint Series but like most of the field lost Union Coach to a claim. And in the finale, conditioner Jorge Maravilla wrapped up the final Friday of June with 5-1 Joey Ten.

The Betting Window

The day began with a Kevin Krigger daily double. Krigger’s runner in the 2nd, Miss Union was a nice 5-1 but he began with a 1-5 shot aboard Bull Tiz. The result was just a $12.72 return. You would have made more with a win bet on Miss Union that paid $12.86.

In the 2nd race a field of well matched 5 runners and the 5-1 to 4-1 to 11-1 50-cent trifecta paid a hearty $87.48. The 1-1 favorite Eyelight ran 4th but triggered a decent $21.18 dime superfecta or $211.80 for the dollar bet.

The late pick 4 was decent with a $527 pay-out but the Pick 5 was a nice chunk of change with winners walking off with $2,683. The 10-cent Pick 6 could only muster 5 of 6 winners which paid $69.25 and a building $7,643.83 carry-over heading into the Corgi weekend.

Horseshoe Friday Night

3 contestants had a shot at $1,000 with the Friday night horseshoe toss and while none of them were close to a ringer, Steve Medina of Black Diamond edged Denise Anderson from Auburn for the $100 consolation prize.
