When it comes to the major sports such as baseball and football, Seattle fans are well known for being one of the most spirited and loud fan bases in America. It has always been like this, whether the teams performed well or not, but this past year has opened up a lot of eyes to how crazy Seattle fans can be and how they lead to the success of their teams. Everybody knows of the 12th Man and what it means to the Seahawks, and it is a big reason why some teams struggle to play the Seahawks at home. So many iconic moments have been generated due to the loudness of the stadium, such as the Beast Quake or the new “Shaheed Quake” this past year. Football alone should tell you how amazing Seattle fans are, but then there are the Mariners. Anyone who has been to a Mariners game knows that it doesn’t take much for the stadium to get packed, and the atmosphere, especially in the postseason, is one of the best in all of sports.
These are the two most obvious examples, but when the World Cup came to Seattle, it changed the way people saw the city. The six World Cup games that have taken place at Seattle Stadium have been among the most electric, loud, and wild environments that have been seen in a long time and seemingly the best of all the World Cup venues this year. The amount of sheer passion for the countries and the sport was outstanding, and the place was deafening from start to finish. The Sounders have always been a successful soccer team in the MLS and have many fans in Seattle, but for the World Cup to draw a crowd like that in a place that is dominated by football and baseball is amazing.
Every sport that has been added to Seattle has been a success. When the Kraken showed up, Seattle fans packed the house. The Storm always have a steady number of fans at every game, with major support given their success over the years. Sounders have been a staple in Seattle sports for many decades and have the achievements to back it up. Tacoma Rainiers games always have great showings and are something that any family can look forward to for a fun weekend. The two main colleges in Washington State and University of Washington have two of the best fan bases in college sports. You name it, and the fans from Seattle and all over Washington will show up and show out.
This goes to show that it doesn’t matter the sport; Seattle fans will show up and be the best of the best. They care so much for their team’s win, lose, or draw, and they play a big role in the success of Seattle sports. It is an advantage that not too many other cities have. A noon game on a Tuesday for the Mariners can still be louder and more electric than other teams you might see, and that is a testament to the city and those all over the state of Washington. The return of the Sonics will be one of the greatest days in Seattle sports history and the crowd it will draw and the passion from the city will be one of the best environments in sports. Once the Sonics come back and Seattle has a basketball team again, there will be no denying that Seattle is one of if not the best sports town in the nation. As if there isn’t enough proof.
