Tennessee 19, Seattle 16
(Nashville, TN) The Seattle Seahawks once again scored a touchdown on their opening drive when QB Drew Lock found 2nd year tight end Elijah Arroyo on a 35-yard strike for the touchdown and took a 7-0 lead completing the 7-play drive in less than 4 minutes.
The Seahawks would continue to add to that fast start behind a fast and rigid defense and the offense really in an early groove.
The defense gave up a 55-yard Titan field goal on their 1st possession but quickly added another 6 when Seahawk running back Jacardia Wright took the hand-off and went straight up the middle threw a gigantic hole and went 69-yards untouched for 6 on the 4th play of the Hawks 2nd drive. Kicker Jason Myers then missed the PAT and Seattle led 13-3.
The Hawks defense then rose to the challenge stuffing a 4th and 1 and turning that turnover into 3 points with a Myers 48 yard field goal with 1:20 left to go in the 1st quarter.
Seattle’s defense held again and the offense moved the ball down the field but stalled at the 37-yard line. Myers then missed a 44-yard field goal attempt for a very up and down game for the longtime Seahawk kicker.
Just prior to that field goal attempt, Lock found Montorie Foster Jr in the end zone but Foster couldn’t quite keep total control of the catch as it touched the ground and the ball moved so it was incomplete taking a touchdown off the board.
After the 1st quarter the Hawks were in control, leading 16-3.
In the 2nd quarter, the Titans got a few things going but could only manage another pair of field goals. A muffed punt by Seattle’s Cody White gave Tennessee a huge chance as they recovered the ball on the Seattle 11. But the Hawks defense stepped up holding the Titans to a Joey Slye 33 yard field goal making it 16-6.
The biggest improvement for Tennessee was on the defense as they shut out the Hawks for the rest of the 1st half and scored a 3rd field goal late in the half pulling them within 16-9 at the break.
2nd Half meltdown
Jalen Milroe took over the offense for the Seahawks in the 3rd quarter but struggled mightily. Milroe would throw two interceptions and once again take on a 4th down. This time late in the game killing any chance of a Seattle comeback.
Tennessee trailed by 7 at the half and pulled within 4 with Slye’s 4th field goal of the game after a big interception giving the Titans the ball on the Seattle 38. The Hawks defense stiffened again forcing a 4th and 8 as Slye hit the 43-yard field goal just 5 seconds into the 4th quarter.
Seattle’s offense just could never find the magic of the 1st quarter and would run just 9 plays in the 4th quarter.
Tennessee took their first and only lead on a 13 play drive that went 64 yards. The big play on the drive was a 4th and 3 on the Seattle 7 and Titans QB Will Levis ran the ball 5 yards giving Tennessee a 1st and goal on the 2 yard line. D’Ernest Johnson then plowed in from the 2, Slye hit the PAT and the Titans led 19-16.
The Titans Derrick Canteen would pick off Milroe with 3:08 to play. A 1st down inside the 5-yard line allowed Tennessee to knee it out and collect the win.
Seattle Numbers
Seattle’s offense was led by Drew Lock who was 12/14 for 103 and a touchdown and no interceptions. Lock played the whole 1st half. Jalen Milroe was in for the 3rd and 4th quarters and was 6/11 for 52 yards and 2 interceptions.
The top receiver was Elijah Arroyo with 2 catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Leading rusher was Jacardia Wright on 8 carries for 81 yards including the 69-yard touchdown run.
Seattle kicker Jason Myers struggled going 1 for 2 in field goals and extra points. Seattle punter Michael Dickson punted 3 times, dropped two of them inside the 20 and averaged 47.7 yards per kick.
The Seahawks coimmitted 3 turnovers, the muffed punt by Cody White and 2 interceptions from Milroe.
The leading tackler for the Hawks J R Singleton with 10 including 2 solo tackles. Linebacker Connor O’Toole had 1.5 sacks, 2 tackles for loss and 2 hits on the QB. Chazz Surratt had a sack and Jamie Sheriff got a 1/2 sack and added 2 QB hits.
Titan Stats
Tennessee’s total QB stats were 21/32 for 149 yards. Cam Ward led the Titans going 8/12 for 69 yards. The leading receiver was Tony Pollard with 1 catch for 33 yards.
The Titans picked up 128 yards on the ground from 36 carries led by Julius Chestnut with 8 carries for 48 yards. Their only touchdown was a 2 yard plunge from D’Ernest Johnson.
Most of the offense for Tennessee came off the foot of kicker Joey Slye where he went 4/4 in field goals with a long of 55 yards and 1/1 in PAT’s.
Truman Jones led the Titan defense with 1.5 sacks and 2 QB hits. Anthony Hill led in tackles with 7 and had a pick. Derrick Canteen had the other interception. Jalen McMurray recovered the fumbled punt.
Injuries
Head Coach Mike Macdonald reported a couple of more injuries in his post game news conference. Rookie safety Bud Clark broke his ankle and is out likely a couple of months. Offensive guard Mason Richman also suffered what was called a severe injury but Macdonald did not disclose much information on Richman injury other than he walked off the field under his own power.
Both injuries come on the heels of receiver Jake Bobo suffering a season ending knee injury during the Seattle and Tennessee joint practice on Friday.
Up Next
Both teams will wrap up their pre-season action this coming weekend, the Titans will host the Bears on Saturday and Seattle goes to Kansas City on Friday night.
