Seattle 90, Toronto 78
(Seattle, WA) The Seattle Storm got off to a solid start in this game against the Toronto Tempo and the better start carried through for a win. Several recent games a big deficit at halftime was something Seattle had been unable to overcome with several good 2nd half rallies.
The Storm put up 23 1st quarter points to lead Toronto 23-19. A late 6-3 run in the 1st gave the Storm the early lead.
Toronto dug in in the 2nd quarter and came out firing outscoring the Storm 16-6 to take a 35-29 lead with about 6 minutes to play in the half. Seattle re-grouped onm the fly and reeled off 7 striaght points capped with a 3 ball from Flau’jae Johnson and re-took the lead 36-35.
The two teams traded scoring runs and with less than 4 seconds to play in the half Seattle’s Awa Fam drained a 3-ball and the Storm went to the break with a 1 point, 43-42 lead.
Toronto had the edge in the first 4-minutes of the 3rd quarter taking control with a 54-49 lead. With 3:28 to play Fam hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 57-57. Seattle then pushed their lead to 6 when Fam dropped another long ball from behind the arc on an assist from Katie Lou Samuelson and the lead was 64-58. The Storm never gave up the lead after a 64-61 lead after 3 quarters.
Seattle’s offense was firing on all cylinders in the 4th, racking up 26 points and extending their lead to 81-68 as they cruised to the final 90-78 win. This avoided a season sweep by the Tempo and gave the Storm a little momentum heading into their final 5 games of the year.
Toronto was led by Kiki Rice with 24 points as the Tempo falls to 11-27 and are next on the road at Las Vegas.
Seattle’s leading scorer was Flau’jae Johnson with 20, Dominique Malonga knocked down 18 and led in rebounds with 7, Jade Melbourne added 16, 6 boards and 7 assists. Katie Lou Samuelson had a big game off the bench with 8 points and 6 rebounds.
The Storm will host Los Angeles on Sunday.
