(Renton, WA) Sunday was a huge day for all NFL teams that is truly bitter sweet. Many players find out they have made the 53-man roster while many others find out they won’t be with the team any longer unless they get signed onto the practice squad.
We’ll post all the moves of the Seattle Seahawks and who made the final roster.
Notes of Interest around the League
The biggest news of the cutdown day wasn’t a cut at all it was an unretirement. Aaron Donald rejoins an already stacked Rams defense. Some surprising players made teams final 53 man rosters were Odell Beckham with the Giants and JJ McCarthy with the Vikings.
The Packers traded for Kaleb Johnson from Pittsburgh with Josh Jacobs being added to the Commissioner’s exempt list. The Dolphins cleared out their quarterback room keeping starter Malik Willis and trading for Kyle McCord from Green Bay after sending Quinn Ewers to Jacksonville in a trade.
Some of the most surprising quarterback cuts were Tennessee waving former starter and 1st round draft pick Will Levis and the Bucs letting Jake Browning walk. A number of big name running backs got cut like the Cowboys 2nd round pick Jaydon Blue. Arizona let Trey Benson go and the Titans released D’Earnst Johnson.
The Giants cut offensive lineman Evan Neal a former #7 overall pick. The Broncos released DB Taylor Rapp and the Jets waived Mazi Smith who they acquired from Dallas in the Quinnen Williams trade.
The Cleveland Browns decided to keep all four of their QB’s placing Dillon Gabriel on the injured reserve list.
Seattle Seahawks final 53
The Seattle Seahawks had to make some difficult desicions on this day and nothing really out of the ordinary was revealed except that they released newly aquired Trevon Diggs who just signed a minimal 1 year contract and had an interception in the final pre-season game. So what happened?
Rules, Rules, Rules
Well, the NFL has many rules and one of them is called “Terminated Vested Veteran”. This allows the team and a player who does not have to clear waivers can come to an agreement that the team will release them and then sign them to the practice squad. This is what the Seahawks did with Diggs adding that since Diggs has been in cap a little more than a week this move will allow him to get more acclimated to his new team.
Other key veterans who were also waived and can be signed to the practice squad include 3 other DB’s Noah Igbinoghene, D’Anthony Bell and Rodney Thomas II. On the offensive side of the ball veterans released were receiver Cody White, tackle Bobby Hart, tight end Nick Vannett and RB Velus Jones Jr.
Trade Made
After signing DB Terrion Arnold he has now been placed on the Commisioner’s exempt list while he goes through his legal process. The Hawks were still looking for depth after losing rookie Bud Clark to a fractured leg in the 2nd pre-season game at Tennessee and signed Diggs.
But they weren’t done looking for help and made a trade with the LA Chargers sending them a 6th round pick in next year’s draft for rookie cornerback Avery Smith out of Toledo. Smith will likely be aimed at the nickel position but overall gives Head Coach Mike Macdonald another layer of depth.

The following players were released and now must clear waivers for the Seahawks to be able to offer a practice squad deal. They can all sign with any team in the league once they clear waivers.

The Seahawks also made several other moves beginning with Zach Charbonnett placing him on the PUP list which means he will be out at least 4 games. Four players were placed on the Waived/Injured list and were Aaron Smith, Amari Kight, Brock Lampe and Power Echols.
