Olympia 5, Bellarmine Prep 2

(Olympia, WA) The Olympia Bears got off to a fast start against the Bellarmine Prep Lions and they would ride that all the way to the win. In the bottom of the 1st Scott Gunther would lead off with a single for the Bears, steal 2nd and then get knocked in on a Ben Pedigo infield base hit to go up 1-0.

Starting pitcher James Gunther would give up a run in the top of the 2nd when Peter Allegro led off with a walk. Allegro would steal 2nd and then moved to 3rd on a sac fly. He would score the tying run on an RBI ground-out by Ben Jensen.

Olympia struck back in the bottom of the 3rd when Scott Gunther again led off on base this time with a walk. Skyler Davis would get hit by a pitch when he turned to sac bunt and Olympia had runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. After a fielder’s choice that moved Gunther to 3rd and left Ben Pedigo on 1st with 1 out, Daulton Elliott slapped a single for the RBI and the Bears re-took the lead 2-1.

Skyler Davis would then come through in the bottom of the 4th with a key base hit with 2 on and 2 out. Connor Clark running for James Gunther would score as would Scott Gunther for the 3rd time, Scott had gotten on with his 2nd walk of the game. That pushed the lead to 4-1 giving the Bears a comfortable lead. The base hit by Davis would also chase Lions starter Brady Robic and Derouin Taylo would come in in relief.

Prep would get one more in the 5th when Sam Behnke walked followed by a walk to Brock Gagliardi, then with 2 out and 2 on Joe Scarsella came through with a clutch basehit to score Behnke making it 4-2. But the Bears would take that right back when Elliott got on by an error and then stole 2nd. Christian Valdez who had a lead-off double in the 2nd but was thrown out trying to take home on a James Gunther base hit would connect again with an RBI base hit and that would end the scoring.

Olympia’s Fred Carpenter would come in to relieve Gunther and shut down the Lions as they posted the 5-2 win. Olympia is now 4-1 in Narrows League play while the Lions dropped to 0-5. Our Tommy Lowe of the Greene Realty Group Players of the Game were James Gunther for Olympia and Brock Gagliardi for Bellarmine. Our ProActive physical therapy Play of the game went to Olympia’s Skyler Davis for his clutch 2-out, 2-RBI single driving in the eventual winning run.
