Saturday, March 8 CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY!

State Championship Game

Gonzaga Prep 57, (8) Puyallup 55

The Gonzaga Bullpups came into the State Tournament 23-0 and undefeated against Washington State schools but did have 2 non-league losses early in the season. They also had experience against their rival in the State Championship, the Puyallup Vikings as they faced off at Regionals. The Bullpups pulled off a 2 point, 56-54 win.

The Vikings then had to play the play-in game on Wednesday and knocked out 9 seed Davis in a thrilling 64-60 win. Puyallup then defeated the 7 seed and defending State Champ Mt Si to get to the semi’s and took the next step with a tough faught win over West Valley of Yakima.

This was set to be a down to the wire showdown and in the case did not disappoint. There was no feeling out process they had just faced off a week ago.

The Bullpups got off to a solid start knocking down 20 while edging out to a 6 point lead after the 1st. The Bullpups couldn’t keep the momentum and the Vikings had the answer with a 16-13 2nd quarter and they went to halftime with G-Pup 33-30.

In the 3rd the Pups pushed their lead to 7 the largest lead in the game before the Vikings rallied back and they pushed the 3rd quarter 13-13 setting up a spectacular final 8 minutes.

The Vikings stayed right on the heels of G-P and with a minute to go the Bullpups were leading 55-53. With the shot clock winding down Brogan Howell took about a 15 foot straight on jumper but it was short. Carter Nilson then picked off a huge offensive rebound and dished it out to Hudson Floyd.

Floyd wanted to drain the clock when Lawson Looker for the Vikings poked the ball away and as they scrambled for the loose ball it went out of bounds and ruled off of Floyd to give Puyallup the ball with 52-seconds to play in the game.

Puyallup took their time with the possession when Drew Jones cut free on the base line and sank a 12 footer to tie the game with 33 seconds to play at 55.

G-P’s next possession they brought the ball and just across midcourt and drew a foul. This left 18 seconds left on the clock. After taking the ball Howell then took charge dribbling it down to about 8 seconds then attack the key drifted to his right and launched a 10 foot baseline jumper and hit nothing but the bottom of the net with a massive clutch shot leaving just 2 seconds after Puyallup called time out.

But there was not enough time for the Vikings and suffered their second straight crushing 2 point loss to the Bullpups. Drew Jones was spectacular with 20 points to lead the Viks, Will Nasinec had 13 including a massive 3 to pull the Viks within 2 at 55-53 just prior to Jones’ big tying shot. Lawson Looker added 13 points and 6 rebounds. Puyallup finished the year 23-8 with the 2nd place trophy.

The Bullpups finished 26-2 for the year but 26-0 against Washington state and take the big trophy home. Gonzaga Prep had 6 in the scorebook led by Carter Nilson’s 16 points, Hudson Floyd added 12, Jackson Mott 9 and Brogan Howell had 7 including the game winning 2. He also had 7 assists, 3 rebounds and a steal to earn our Thorbeckes MVP of the game award.

Consolation Games

8am  4th/6th Place Game
(4) Richland 74, (5) Camas 67

Many may be scratching their heads trying to fiugure out how the Richland Bombers were playing for 4th place on Saturday at 8am instead of the Championship at 9pm. The Bombers scored more points than any other team and was extremely consistent with 63, 70, 75 and 74 points averaging 71 points a game. But when they scored 70 in the quarters it wasn’t enough as West Valley pulled the minor upset as the 6 seed over the 4 seeded Bombers 73-70.

Richland, no doubt disappointed, did not throw in the towel and were determined to take home as high of as they could when they faced 5th seeded Camas. This was a great game for such an early start both teams came out firing with Richland holding the 1st half advantage 39-29.

The Papermakers were not going to go quietly and got back into the game with a 21-16 run in the 3rd setting up a shot to come back in the 4th. Camas was then dealt a blow when 6’8 Jr Ethan Harris got injured and could not return. Harris left with 18 points and 5 rebounds and clearly could have made a difference.

The Bombers resisted and went on take the 4th place trophy. Landen Northrop led the Bombers with 23 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and 2 steals to earn our Thorbeckes MVP of the game. Lance Horntvedt added 19 and 7 while Jackson Woodard scored 13.  Richland finished 26-3 and although disappointed they didn’t get their 2nd ever State Title they have to be proud of their run in this tournament.

Camas was led by Harris and Jace VanVoorhis each with 18 while Channing Nesland scored 15  and Cade Washington had 11. The Papermakers finished with a 22-7 record and the 6th place trophy matching their last trophy win in 2023.

Leading G-P was Josiah Lee with a huge effort scoring 29 and was named the Thorbeckes MVP of the game. Lee had a lot of help from Zachary Albright who scored 7 but grabbed 13 boards. The Grizzlies finished the year 24-4 and matched their best finish ever with the 3rd place trophy which they won just last year.

West Valley got another big game from Landen Birley with 22 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Rams in both categories. The Rams ended up 19-7 for the season and took home 5th place. It’s the Rams 1st trophy since 2008.

(5) Camas 64, (2) Auburn 40

After a devastating OT loss to #1 Gonzaga Prep in the quarters ending their run for a State Title it looked like the Trojans were simply drained and could not resist a big effort by the Camas Papermakers.

Camas also tasting a bitter OT loss in the quarters where they did not have their best offensive game losing to Glacier Peak 44-42 had the opposite reaction, the one all coaches hope their teams with have a re-energized commitment to finish strong. The Papermakers came out firing with 38 1st half points and held the Trojans to just 20. There was no resurgence left in Auburn this time and Camas rolled into the Trophy round on Saturday.

Semifinals (Winner to Championship, Loser to 3rd place game)
(1) Gonzaga Prep 62, (3) Glacier Peak 50 (OT)

The 3 seed Glacier Peak Grizzlies were primed for the upset over the top seed and trying to advance to their 1st ever appearance in the State Title game. The Grizzlies led 29-24 at the half. G-P’s offense then went cold, the savng grace was their defense was keeping them in the game limiting the Bullpups offense.

Heading into the 4th quarter the Grizzlies were up 38-36 but once again the Grizzly offense was held to just 9 points and Gonzaga Prep chipped away and came up with 11 to send this one to overtime.

However, the momentum had swung and the Bullpups exploded for their best offensive output of the game and needed only 4 minutes to outdo each of the previous 4 8-minute quarters with 15 points. The Grizzlies needed to hang on in regulation but just fell short and the Pups took full advantage to head for a Regional re-match with the Puyallup Vikings at 9pm on Saturday night.

Gonzaga Prep had 4 in double figures with Carter Nilson hitting a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds to earn our Thorbeckes MVP. Ryan Carney led with 14 points while Hudson Floyd and Brogan Howell each had 12. The Pups are now 25-2 for the season.

(8) Puyallup 53, (5) West Valley (Yak) 46

The 8 seeded Puyallup Vikings were on a mission after losing a 2 point Regional game to Gonzaga Prep they knew they could win it all if they took care of business. They faced the upstart West Valley Rams in the semi’s after they knocked off the 4 seed Richland in the quarters.

The 1st half was advantage Rams in the 1st quarter 11-6 and then advantage Puyallup in the 2nd 15-6 and the Vikings led 21-19 at the break. The two teams would push 18-18 in the 3rd setting up a contenscious 4th quarter with the Vikings holding a slight advantage.

Puyallup would end up shooting 40% from the floor over the 30% for the Rams and that surge in the end was enough to advance Puyallup to the Finals for a re-match with #1 seed Gonzaga Prep at 9pm.

The Vikings were led by Drew Jones who pured in 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds and was named the Thorbeckes MVP of the game. Mason Sonntag had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Puyallup is now 23-7 as they head into the Title game.

(1) Gonzaga Prep 53, (2) Auburn 50

Auburn stubbed their toe in the Regionals which made them play-in in the round of 16 to get to the quarters which they handled but then faced off with top seeded Gonzaga Prep. The Trojans were ready for the battle and led the Bullpups 23-18 in a low scoring tussle through the 1st half.

G-P got 6 of those points back in the 3rd and trailed 37-34 after 24 minutes as they headed into the final quarter. Nothing was between these two and when the clock ran out they were deadlocked 44-44.

As they went to OT it came down to the final minute and change when the “Carter’s” exchanged 3 point bombs. Trailing 47-46, Gonzaga Prep’s Carter Nilson drained a big 3 to give the Bullpups the lead. Carter Hansen wasted no time to answer and dropped a 3 ball of his own to push the Trojans back on top 50-49 with 1:17 to go in OT.

(8) Puyallup 55, (7) Mount Si 47

The defending champion Mt Si Wildcats were hoping for the shot to defend their title but came up against a fiesty Puyalloup Viking squad. These two teams also battled like the other 3 quarter finalists with Puyallup leading 24-22 at the half but the Wildcats evening it up after 3 quarters 41-41.

Mt Si picked a bad time to go cold and Puyallup took full advantage especially Drew Jones who finished with 33 points. Jones put the game away with a big old-fashioned 3-point play with less than a minute to go with the lay-in and free throw and the Vikings pulled away with a 14-6 4th quarter run.

Jones with his 33 point effort was the clear choice for our Thorbeckes MVP of the game award. Will Nasinec had a solid outing for the purple and gold with 10 points and led the Viks in rebounds with 8. Mason Sonntag also had a good game with 8 points and 5 boards.
