Saturday, March 8 CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY!

State Championship Game

(1) Davis 61, (8) Sumner 45

The Davis Pirates served notice they were serious last year with a 3rd place finish. They came cruising into the the State Tournament with a 20-2 record and the top seed. Maybe a little too comfortable as Sumner stunned the Pirates in the Regional on their home court none the less with a 67-62 win. The Pirates were now going to have to play a loser out game on Wednesday in the Tacoma Dome just to get into the quarters and the double-elimination portion of the tournament.

The Sumner experience turned them back on as they rolled through the 9 seed Mead 81-58. The early loss then forced an early 1 vs 2 match-up in the quarters and the Pirates handled Lake Washington 71-59. They blew by Cinderella, the 13 seeded Glacier Peak in the semi’s 76-38 and advaned the hard way to the State Championship game.

Guess who was there waiting for them? That’s right the last team to beat them the Sumner Spartans. Sumner advanced outplaying their 8 seed with a win over Davis then beat the 7 seed and defedning State Champ Camas before taking care of the 4 seed Woodinville in the semifinals setting up the re-match.

You have to say this aboout Davis they learned their lesson and came out on fire once again scoring 17 and 12 holding the spartans to 7 and 7 for a 29-14 lead. This would really do it for Sumner as they did play better in the 2nd half scoring 31 but Davis did plenty to keep that cushion with 32 2nd half points for the comfortable win.

Davis did most of their damage behind the 3 point line going 10-21 for 48% while the Spartans were a cold 3-15 or just 20% behind the line. The Pirates were led by the Thorbeckes MVP of the game Cheyenne Hull with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Naveah Parrish added 15 and 9 in the Championship effort.

Sumner made a valiant run through the tournament and gave it all they had finishing the season with a 25-5 record. Kawehi Borden led the Spartans with 24 points and Parker Gould added 10

Davis wins their 1st ever State girls basketball Championship and finished the season with a 24-3 final mark.

Consolation Games

9:30am  4th/6th Place Game
(3) Chiawana 47, (6) Auburn 41

Chiawana was hoping to be playing on Saturday but at a later time after getting upset by the 3 seed Glacier Peak in the quarters. The River Hawks bounced back with a nice win on Friday over the 2 seed Lake Washington to get to the trophy round.

Auburn as the 6 seed had already battled the Riverhawks at Regionals and fell short 67-51. The Trojans were determined to make this a much better game and did so with a big 2nd half. The Trojans got started slow trailing the Riverhawks 28-15. But in the 3rd they doubled up Chiawana 10-5 to have a shot in the final quarter trailing 33-25.

But Chiawana was not having it and although got outscored 16-14 in the final frame was enough to take home the 4th place trophy. Chiawana was led by Kaia Foster’s 13 points and got the double-double with 10 boards and earned our Thorbeckes MVP award. Baylee Maldonado had a solid game with 8 points and 9 boards. The Riverhawks finished the year with a 25-2 record.

Auburn was led by Avery Hansen who also knotched a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. Keleesa Howard added 12 points. The Trojans finished the year with a 21-9 mark.

1pm  3rd/5th Place Game
(4) Woodinville 55, (13) Glacier Peak 54

After getting upended by Sumner in the semifinals the Woodinville Falcons were in no mood to play for runners-up positions and came out as flat as a pancake. One of the surprises of the tournaments 13 seeded Glacier Peak beat 3 seeded Chiawana in the quarters to get to the semifinals where top seed Davis ended their Cinderella run to the Title game.

The Grizzlies though were not ready to stop playing and jumped all over a lethargic Falcons squad leading 32-16 at the half outscoring Woodinville 17-8 and 15-8. Well the halftime speech, whomever gave it, was a dandy because the Falcons were a new team. Clearly determined not to finish the year this way.

Woodinvile cut into that lead with a 23-15 3rd quarter and trailed 47-39. They didn’t lose momentum in the 4th and pulled off the win with a late surge with a 16-7 finish to win by 1 point.

Woodinville earned the 4th place trophy and were led by Haily Quiggle with 19 points, Jazlyn Wilkerson added 15 and Sienna Bieler had 12. The Falcons finished the year at 25-4.

Glacier Peak end their year at 21-9 and were led by a huge game from Brynna Pukis who poured in 31 points. Samantha Thoma had 11 and Zoey Ritter with 10 as those 3 combined for all the Grizzly points but 2.

Friday, March 7 Semifinal Friday

Consoltion Round (Loser Out)
(6) Auburn 58, (7) Camas 53

The Auburn Trojans prevented the defending Champs from going home with anything as they slowed down the Camas offense to a crawl for half the game. Holding the Papermakers to just 17 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters gave them the opportunity to build a big lead heading into the final 8 minutes. Up 48-35 after 3, the Trojans withstood the Camas 18-10 rally in the 4th and advances to Saturday.

For Auburn, Avery Hansen scored 15 and Kamryn Huttenlocker added 14. But it was Huttenlocker’s 4 3-pointers off the bench that spurred the Trojan attack and she earned our Thorbeckes MVP award.

Camas got 19 from Sophie Buzzard along with 16 from Lauren Hood and 10 by Keirra Thompson. Camas finished the year 18-9.

Auburn will now face Chiawana for the 4th place trophy on Saturday at 9:30am.

(3) Chiawana 45, (2) Lake Washington 42

This consolation game was a tale of two halves with the Lake Washington Kangaroos taking a 24-17 lead at the half holding Chiawana to single digits in the 1st and 2nd quarters. The Riverhawks then used that same plan and shut down the Kangs in the 3rd and 4th holding them to 6 in the 3rd and then just 12 in the 4th.

This opened the door for the Riverhawks to get their offense rolling. They picked up 6 in the 3rd with a 12-6 run and then overhauled the Kangs 16-12 in the 4th to get the win.

Malia Ruud led with 15 points and 9 boards while Baylee Madonado scored 14  and 6 boards and earned our Thorbeckes MVP for her performance and as the floor leader.

Semifinals (Winner to Championship, Loser to 3rd place game)
(8) Sumner 46,(4) Woodinville 39

These two teams played to a 29-29 tie in the 1st, 3rd and 4th quarters. This left the 2nd quarter to determine the winner. The Sumner Spartans had been on quite a roll since the Regionals knocking off #1 Davis then dispatching the defending State Champs and 7 seed Camas and now they were looking at Woodinville the 4 seed and regular visitor to the Dome.

The Spartans were behind 12-10 after the 1st quarter but came up with the biggest offensive 8 minutes with 17 while holding the Falcons to just 10. That would end up being the difference in the game and the Spartans made their run all the way to the State Championship game.

Olivia Collins scored 25 and grabbed 5 rebounds to be named our Thorbeckes MVP. Kawehi Borden added 15. The Spartans will get another shot at knocking off the top seeded Davis Pirates in Saturday night’s 7pm Title tilt.

Woodinville got 19 points from Haily Quiggle but will take on Glacier Peak on Saturday for 3rd place.

(1) Davis 76, (13) Glacier Peak 38

The Davis Pirates were stunned once in the regionals losing at home to 8 seed Sumner they were not going to be surprised again and certainly not the 13 seeded Glacier Peak Grizzlies. G-P did open their eyes in the 2nd quarter when they knocked down 18 on the Pirate defense. Davis still led 33-27 but that’s all it took for the Pirates to find their high gear once again.

The Pirates defense held Glacier Peak to just 8 3rd quarter points. That’s wasn’t enough for their spic y squad and shut them down to just 3 in the 4th and ran away with the win leaving no doubt who was headed for th big trophy game.

Davis got shared the wealth with Naveah Parrish leading the way with 19 while, Cheyenne Hull knocked down 18, Isa Garcia had 17 and led in rebounds with 7 and Averie Brandt added 11. Isa Garcia took the Thorbeckes MVP award with 17 points and leading the team in rebounds.
