Sammamish Redhawks – 1/3/1
Inglemoor Vikings – 5/6/0
(Bellevue, WA) The five-seed Sammamish Redhawks utilized an outstanding pitching performance from Dayne Castillo and great all-around defense to win their KingCo 3A Quarterfinal game on Wednesday. Inglemoor was in the building, scouting out the Quarterfinal game, and saw the same thing. The top-15 RPI battle shaped out to be full of good defense to determine the second spot in the KingCo Championship Game.
Levi Stark got the start on the mound for Inglemoor and had a dream start to the game, recording five strikeouts in the first two innings, and allowed only two base runners in the first three innings. Jack Lansdowne didn’t match Stark’s strikeout rate, but the Sammamish pitcher forced a lot of ground balls and flyouts to center field, where his reliable outfielder, Kolin Jaster, was called upon multiple times to get those flyouts.
Sammamish broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning, as the Redhawks’ three-hitter, Josh Perez, got on with a single. Dayne Castillo, who had a single in the second inning, knocked in Perez with an RBI double to give Sammamish a 1-0 lead. After the third out in the top of the fourth, Inglemoor’s coaching staff brought everyone out for a team huddle, and that sparked the bats for the Vikings.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Ben Barnes got on via an error to keep the inning going. Carter Madigan immediately drove him in with an RBI single to tie the game at one apiece. Madigan advanced to second in the process, and that would be crucial as his smart base running set up Drew Snider to drive him in. Snider worked the count and knocked in Madigan with an RBI single of his own to give Inglemoor a 2-1 lead through four innings.
Both teams sent only three batters to the plate in the fifth inning, which was highlighted by more great defense. After Inglemoor drew a walk, Ozzy Turner caught a line drive and quickly zipped it over to first for the double play. Inglemoor put another runner on the basepaths but was caught stealing to end the inning.
In the sixth inning, Inglemoor held Sammamish scoreless again, while doing more damage in the bottom of the inning. The Vikings got back-to-back singles from Cooper Richter and Connor Dowell. Ben Barnes drove them both in with a 2-RBI double to make it 4-1. After a flyout and a walk, Dylan Clark added an RBI single to drive in Barnes to make it 5-1, and a 3-run sixth inning for Inglemoor. Sammamish loaded up the bases with two outs, but Cooper Richter came in to get the final out and secure a 5-1 win for Inglemoor.
Inglemoor advances to the KingCo Championship Game on Tuesday at 7 PM against Bellevue on the Eli Sports Network. Sammamish heads to the consolation bracket, where they will face Liberty in a loser out game, also on Tuesday at 4 PM, which will also be on the Eli Sports Network.
Our Thorbeckes Game MVP went to Inglemoor’s Levi Stark. Stark went 6 2/3 innings, gave up only three hits, struck out seven batters, and most importantly, had control of the game from the very first pitch. Stark controlled the game from the mound and never released that control, giving him Game MVP honors for his great performance.
