This year’s U.S. Open has multiple players who are either from Washington, live in Washington, or both. If you don’t have anyone to root for, you can cheer on these local players during the third major championship of the year.
Brady Calkins – Chehalis
Brady Calkins is an accomplished W.F. West golfer, while also being a really good baseball player for the Bearcats in his high school days. Calkins has already played in the U.S. Open once (2022), and will look to use that experience this year. Calkins advanced through qualifying, shooting a 67 at Palouse Ridge in Pullman on May 13 in Local Qualifying. In Final Qualifying, Calkins shot 68 in the first round and 69 in the second round to take one of only two spots from the Walla Walla Final Qualifier. Calkins has played on the Dakotas Tour and spent some time two years ago on the Korn Ferry Tour. Calkins made the State Tournament in high school all four years and finished in the top 10 three times.
Cam Davis – Sammamish
Cam Davis is originally from Australia, however, his wife is an Eastlake graduate, and Davis resides in Sammamish. This is the third year Davis has played in the U.S. Open, the last two years, but he failed to make the cut. Davis owns two PGA Tour wins, winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2021 and 2024. Davis was also on the 2022 Presidents Cup team for the International Team. Davis sits inside the top 70 in the FedEx Cup Standings, meaning he would be eligible to participate in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Davis finished T19 in the PGA Championship, after being T2 after the first round.
Alistair Docherty – Vancouver
Alistair Docherty is originally from Canada, however, he now lives in Vancouver, Washington. Docherty plays on the Korn Ferry Tour, which is similar to AAA baseball in the MLB. The top 20 players in the Korn Ferry Tour Points List get PGA Tour cards, and Docherty is 34. Docherty has never won on the Korn Ferry Tour, but has a pair of top 10s this season at the LECOM Suncoast Classic and The Panama Championship. Docherty finished T2 at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship last fall, finishing one shot out of a playoff.
Joe Highsmith – Lakewood
Joe Highsmith is a Bellarmine Prep graduate and has already had a career year. Highsmith won the Cognizant Classic in March for his first career PGA Tour victory. Highsmith finished T20 at The Players and T22 at the Valspar. Last month, Highsmith made his first cut at a major at the PGA Championship and finished T8. The lefty teed it up at the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines when he was at Pepperdine, but missed the cut. Highsmith got his start in golf at Tacoma Country & Golf Club in Lakewood, which is where Michael and Andrew Putnam also played. Both Putnam brothers have played in the U.S. Open, and Michael played in the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont, where he finished T55.
