The Numbers
There were 64 starters over 9 races on Sunday for an average of 8 runners per race. The betting has been a bit lower for the first two days of the Gold Cup competition but they bounced back on Sunday with $1,456,628 total handle. That’s an average of $161,848 per race.
It was the 3rd straight day of a big crowd with Sunday’s being the largest yet. The promotions department had the big show in the park for families with multiple bounce and air inflated toys, several food trucks and the crowd extended all the way down to the 1/8th pole.
The concessions sales were easily a high for the season so far.
From the Saddle
8 riders scored wins on Sunday with only Manny Americano doubling. 14 different riders placed in the top 3 and the depth of the Jockey’s room continues to show this is a tough go and each rider is going to earn their wins.
Julien Couton continues to take advantage of his limited opportunities. Since June 1st Couton has had 12 mounts and he’s 4-3-3 with wins on each race day but June 8th where he had 1 ride and placed 2nd and on June 14 where he did not have a mount. His June win percent is 33%, exacta finish at 58% and trifecta rate of 83%.
Carlos Montalvo is another one using his opportunities to their full extent. Montalvo won, placed and took 4th in 4 rides Sunday and for the weekend had just 9 rides and finished 2-2-1-1 or a 22% win rate and a 67% top 4 finish.
Other winners included Kevin Orozco who won the 3rd for his lone win of the weekend, Alex Cruz took the 6th, Kevin Krigger the 7th and Silvio Amador the 8th and featured race.
One other winner was Francisco Duran who brought home 19-1 Chelan Summer in the final race on Sunday. This was Duran’s 7th win of the year and 1st since May 18. Duran doubled on opening day then on Sunday, May 11 and two more on Sunday, May 18.
Since then it has been a bit of a struggle for Duran until Sunday where he snapped the cool streak and got back in the winner’s circle.
The Streaks
Kevin Krigger came into Sunday with wins over 12 straight days and Manny Americano at 11 in a row. Krigger also led Americano by 1 win in the Jockey standings.
Manny Americano didn’t waste anytime extending his streak to 12 days winning the opener by a neck. The win also tied Krigger’s current streak and tied Krigger for the Jockey’s lead. Amricano then won the 5th race and took gthe Jockey lead now up on Krigger 26-25.
Krigger got the 7th race still looking for a win when he rode Bob’s Vai to the win as an odds-on choice. The extended his streak to 13 consecutive days and notted up the jockey’s race with each at 26 wins.
Starting the day on Sunday there were 7 trainers withing 4 wins of each other with 2-time defending Champ Justin Evans taking his first lead on Saturday with a pair of wins to lead by 2 with 11 on the year. Tim McCanna, Blaine Wright and Howie Gibson were all tied for 2nd with 9, Frank Lucarelli and Jorge Rosales are next with 8 wins and Isidro Tamayo had 7.
Out of the 7 trainers only 2 are not former training Champs at Emerald and they are Howie Gibson and Isidro Tamayo.
After Sunday’s races the trainer battle tighgtened up with Evans getting shut out but Tim McCanna, Howie Gibson and Blaine Wright all found the winner’s circle. Evans still leads but those 3 are now just behind by 1 with 10 wins each.
One other trainer singled on the card Victor Trujillo took the 3rd race registering his 3rd win of the season.
Doubling Up
Two conditioners doubled on Sunday. Tom Wenzel took the 2nd race with Silvery Orb for owner James Carlin and the 4th race with Jullian in Paris for George Todaro. Wenzel recorded his 5th and 6th wins of the season.
