(Gig Harbor, WA) The USGA held a U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier at Canterwood Golf Club & Country Club. Only two players advanced to the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, held August 23-28 at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
Maple Valley’s Gary Sherrell took medalist honors with an even par 72. Sherrell played smooth golf, recording 14 pars and a pair of birdies, and a pair of bogeys. Sherrell beat Canada’s Steve Wheeler by a shot, as Wheeler fired a 1-over 73. Wheeler had 15 pars, two bogeys, and a birdie to get the job done and clinch a spot in the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.
Neil MacLeod from Canada and Michael Swingle from Carnation are the first and second alternates after they each shot a 2-over 74.
The course was a tricky test, playing at 6.46 over par. The front was slightly harder than the back with an average score of 39.38, compared to the back nine at 39.08. The hardest hole on the course was the sixth hole, a 420-yard par 4, which saw only three birdies. Three holes ahead was the easiest hole on the course, the short par-4 ninth, only 340 yards, featured the only two eagles on the day and nine birdies with only four bogeys or worse.
