(Woodburn, OR) The USGA held a U.S. Amateur Qualifier at OGA Golf Course. Only three players advanced to the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, held August 4-10 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon Dunes).
Earning medalist honors was Kacey Ly from Temple City, California. Ly shot a bogey-free 8-under 64, which featured seven consecutive birdies. Ly birdied the sixth through 12th holes, while also adding a birdie on the 15th hole. Ly shot a pair of 4-under 32s on the nine holes. Ly is an incoming freshman to UCLA, who earlier this month, won medalist honors at a qualifier for the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.
Erin Lee from Canada shot a 4-under 68 to finish second. Lee was even on the front nine but birdied four holes on the back nine to card a 4-under 32. Lee goes to Long Beach State University and was an Honorable Mention on the All-Big West team this year. Kaleiya Romero from San Jose, California, shot a 3-under 69 to secure the final spot from the qualifier. Romero went to Pepperdine, and last year was a graduate assistant with the University of Oregon’s women’s golf team. Kaleiya’s sister, Kiara, is ranked third in the Women’s WAGR (World Amateur Golf Rankings).
The hardest hole on the course was the 2nd hole. It’s a 405-yard par 4, where there were only three birdies and 28 bogeys, and an average score of 4.61. The easiest hole on the course was the 11th hole, a 505-yard par 5. There were 21 birdies, only six bogeys, and just one double bogey, with an average score of just 4.77. The front nine played slightly harder than the back, with an average score of 38.05 compared to 37.67 on the back.
