Round of 16

After a great morning by taking down World Amateur Golf Ranking #1 (WAGR) Jackson Koivun, Bellevue’s Max Herendeen faced off against Mason Howell. Herendeen took a quick 1 Up lead despite bogeying the first hole. Howell went on a run by winning the third, fourth, and fifth holes, but Herendeen came back by taking the sixth and eighth holes to tie the match. Howell went 1 Up by winning the 12th hole, but again Herendeen had the answer and birdied 14 to tie the match. Howell grabbed the lead back with a birdie on 15 to go 1 Up and on the 17th, Herendeen had a par putt to halve the hole, but it lipped out, giving Howell a 2 & 1 win and advancing the Georgian to the quarterfinals.

Herendeen’s great run in the championship comes to an end, but this week further proved that Herendeen is on track for another great college season. Making match play at the Western Amateur, teeing it up in the PGA Tour’s 3M Open, and rising to inside the top 20 in the WAGR were just some of the highlights to his summer. Herendeen will begin his junior year at the University of Illinois in mid-September for the Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club. Herendeen will make a pair of trips to Oregon in the spring, first for the Duck Invitational at the Eugene Country Club in March and in May at the Big Ten Championship at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, just outside of Portland.

Round of 32

Max Herendeen faced his toughest test yet, by going up against the #1 ranked player in the WAGR, Jackson Koivun. Koivun goes to Auburn University and has a pair of top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour this year. Koivun jumped out to a 1 Up lead by taking the second hole. Herendeen answered by winning the fifth, seventh, and eighth holes. Herendeen had back-to-back two’s by recording an eagle on the par-4 seventh, and a birdie on the par-3 eighth. Koivun won the ninth hole to chop the lead in half. Herendeen birdied 11 to go back to a 2 Up lead, and put the pressure on Koivun by winning the 14th hole to go 3 Up with four to play. The two halved the 15th and 16th holes, giving Herendeen the victory and advancing to the Round of 16. Herendeen now faces Mason Howell from Georgia.

Round of 64

Max Herendeen went up against Arni Sveinsson from Iceland. Herendeen got off to a great start by winning the first hole despite bogeying it. Herendeen then won the sixth hole with a par to go 2 Up. He won the 11th and 12th holes for a 4 Up lead and Herendeen would close out the match with a 4 & 3 victory. Herendeen never trailed in the match, never dropped a hole, and only made one birdie in the 15 hole win. The University of Illinois star will face Jackson Koivun, the #1 player in the WAGR in the Round of 32.

Zachary Miller faced off against Jase Summy from Texas. Summy won two of the first four holes for a 2 Up advantage. Miller bounced back by winning the sixth hole to go 1 Down. Summy retailiated by winning the seventh hole for another 2 Up lead. Miller won the ninth hole to go 1 Down making the turn. Summy would win the 10th, 12th, 13th and 15th holes to win the match 5 & 3. Miller advancing to match play is an accomplishment in itself, as over 300 players qualify for the U.S. Amateur and over 5,000 teed it up in qualifying.
