9/9/25
Football is back and so is Professor DW’s Football Pick ’em Challenge and we had quite the start to both the NFL season and our contest. With a new tiebreaker in place, it would come into effect right away as a majority of the contestants put together strong weeks to begin the season. Trent Twamley was on fire with only one miss after the Bills comeback on Sunday night. His only miss was New England over Las Vegas as the Raiders ended up with the road win. Kariann Sullivan had a strong Sunday only missing on Miami who laid an egg in Indianapolis and Detroit who got bullied in the trenches by Green Bay. However, Kariann picked Minnesota on Monday night while Trent took Chicago and the Vikings second half comeback evened their scores at 14.
Thus the brand new tiebreaker came into play which is the total yardage of made field goals (PATs not included) for the week. There were some missed kicks while 50 yarders are being made at a higher rate than ever before. Trent went low with 587 but Kariann’s guess of 1,200 put her in a golden position with the actual total being 2,446 yards. That gave Kariann the win and her first top two finish in Professor DW history.
Kariann now qualifies for Professor DW’s Postseason Tournament and also beat the Professor, who finished with a respectable 12 points. That nets Kariann $27 and while Trent doesn’t take home any money, he does also qualify for the Postseason Tournament. The winner of the Postseason Tournament wins the Ticket Bonanza! That includes two tickets to the Mariners, Seahawks, Kraken, Sounders, Storm, Tacoma Rainiers, and Emerald Downs. Again, both can continue to play in the regular season to try to block out some of the spots for the tournament to up their chances of winning.
Professor DW actually had a nice showing this week with 12 out of 16 games correct. The only four he missed were Atlanta, New England, the New York Jets, and Houston Texans. Not a bad start for what hopes to be a drought ending season.
With week 1 there are always some surprises that come along with results. However, there weren’t many huge surprises in terms of results this week. A couple of the rarer picked upsets were the Chargers defeating the Chiefs as well as Las Vegas defeating New England in a less surprising upset.
Week 2’s contest is up. The deadline to get your entry in is 4pm on Thursday so get signed up now. Congratulations Kariann and Trent and best of luck to everyone this week.
