(Seattle, WA) Once again the Seattle Mariners found themselves in a rubber game of a three-game series as the M’s and Detroit Tigers wrapped up their season series as well at T-Mobile Park on Thursday afternoon. A chaotic conclusion to Wednesday night’s game saw benches clear and as a result Gabe Speier and Dan Wilson both ejected as well as each being suspended. Speier appealed his three-game suspension, meaning he was available on Thursday while Dan Wilson served his one-game penalty, meaning bench coach Manny Acta served as the Seattle manager for the finale.

Tigers 11, Mariners 0 (Game Three, August 6th)

Just 24 hours after an emotional victory over Detroit, the Seattle Mariners couldn’t carry that momentum into Thursday afternoon. Instead, the Tigers jumped on Seattle early and never looked back, rolling to an 11-0 victory at T-Mobile Park to claim two of three games in the series.

Detroit wasted no time putting pressure on Bryce Miller. Dillon Dingler continued his outstanding series with a two-run home run in the opening inning before the Tigers added another run later in the frame to build a quick 3-0 advantage. The early deficit immediately put the Mariners in catch-up mode, something they were never able to overcome.

Miller battled through five innings but wasn’t able to keep Detroit’s lineup in check. He surrendered four runs before turning the game over to the bullpen, and the Tigers continued to pile on. A four-run seventh inning broke the game completely open before Detroit added three more runs in the ninth to cap the rout.

Seattle’s offense never found an answer against Framber Valdez, who delivered seven scoreless innings while allowing just five hits. The Mariners managed a handful of baserunners but couldn’t produce the timely hit that has been missing far too often during their recent offensive struggles. They were shut out for the second time in the three-game series.

The loss also came on a day when manager Dan Wilson served a one-game suspension following Wednesday night’s bench-clearing incident. Bench coach Manny Acta guided the club in Wilson’s absence, but Seattle never generated the spark it needed after falling behind early. Gabe Speier’s three-game suspension remains under appeal.

Seattle had an opportunity to build on Wednesday’s emotional win and earn a series victory against one of the American League’s top clubs. Instead, the Mariners were reminded how thin the margin for error has become. When the offense doesn’t produce early, the pressure quickly mounts, and Thursday was another example of a lineup searching for consistency at the worst possible time.

What’s Next

After another devastating and non-competitive loss, the Seattle Mariners (56-60) and their inconsistencies continue to prevent them from making a run at the AL West. Both Houston and Texas were off on Thursday while the Angels beat the Orioles 4-1 and the A’s lost to the Reds 6-5. That puts Houston 1 1/2 games up on Texas and three up on Seattle. The M’s also trail Texas for the final Wild Card spot by a game and a half but with four teams between the Mariners and Rangers. This weekend, the Angels visit the Marlins while the A’s are in Boston. Houston will also be on the road in San Diego while Texas hosts Baltimore in a big matchup for Wild Card purposes.

Things get much more difficult now for the Seattle Mariners as they celebrate their 50th season weekend with a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays are 4 1/2 games ahead of the New York Yankees in the AL East and in the race for the best record in the American League. Tampa Bay is coming into Seattle on the heels of sweeping Colorado and after getting swept by Boston out of the All-Star Break are 12-4. They can win with both pitching and offense and have five shutouts since the break.

We highlighted Junior Caminero the last time Seattle and Tampa Bay met so this time we will highlight one of the more intriguing storylines of the season in game two starter Griffin Jax. Jax was one of the most sought-after relievers last deadline and landed in Tampa Bay leaving Minnesota. This season they have converted Jax into a starter and they have seen pretty good results. He began to start games in June and while he won’t go more than six innings yet, he does have just a 3.24 ERA since the transition began. Jax did start against the Mariners on July 11th and allowed one run on four hits in five innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Walks can be an issue for Jax so Seattle has to do the impossible and cutdown on their chase rate to try to force Jax into the zone.
