Timberline 3, Silas 0 (16-25, 12-25, 20-25)
(Lacey, WA) Two teams with similar starts to their year met face-to-face as the Silas Rams went on the road to battle the Timberline Blazers. Both teams stylistically matched up well, and it would be a skill-on-skill fight to see who came out on top. Silas has had a quick turnaround since Steven Cjoi took the reins as head coach. Already has as many wins to start this season as the whole team did last year. Timberline, as well, has gotten off to a strong start and even took a set off the defending state champions. Both teams came together for a powerhouse showdown on a great night for volleyball.
Set one started evenly, and Silas would even take a 6-2 lead after four straight unanswered points with Morgan Stevens at the serving line. Timberline would slowly crawl its way back, though, as time went on. Timberline would trail 5-7 when Islee Rebelez would be up to serve. Destiny Mars would lead the charge on offense and help the Blazers rally a 5-point run to take a 10-7 lead. The set remained close until Emyah Riley went to the serving line and helped Timberline have another big run with an ace and a kill from Kinley Smith. This busted the game open for Timberline, who would not look back. The Blazers finished off the set with a three-point run from Kinley Smith and Emyah Riley. Timberline took set one 25-16.
Silas would start hot to start set two, getting out to a 4-0 lead. This would be short-lived, though, as the Labero Jovie Lind came up to serve for Timberline. She would have two aces and get help from the likes of Destiny Mars, Kinley Smith, and Miya Jackson. This onslaught of offense turned into 7 straight unanswered points. All the momentum was now on Timberline’s side. Silas tried to climb their way back in, but the power was too much from Timberline. Multiple point runs continued for the Blazers, and Jovie Lind capped off the set again at the serving line. Timberline scored four straight with an ace from Lind and kills from Mars and Riley. Timberline won set two 25-12 and took the 2-0 lead.
Set three was the most competitive of all the sets, and Silas started to give Timberline some trouble. Up until the end of the set, it was neck and neck. Silas’ Danielle Bardizian and Timberline’s Destiny Mars and Kinley Smith were exchanging kills early and keeping each others team alive. The score remained within two until Destiny Mars went to the serving line with the 15-13 lead. Timberline scored four straight points with an ace from Mars and a kill from Emyah Riley. Again, Timberline would take a 19-14 lead and not look back. Timberline took set three 25-20 and completed the sweep against Silas.
MVP and Stats
The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game went to Destiny Mars who already was nominated for player of the week this last week. She had 18 points to her name and 16 kills as well as a block and an ace. She was a force to be reckoned with in the front line and was the leader out there for the Timberline offense. If she wasn’t player of the week before, she sure might have solidified that honor after this game
Kinley Smith had an amazing game as well and was a one-two combo with Mars all night. Smith had 12 kills herself and between her and Mars they had 30 points scored. That is an entire set and then some. Those two stood out on offense but defensively Jovie Lind was a game changer. Her defense throughout the game was amazing, constantly making diving saves, one handed saves, and miraculous plays that help the Blazers alive. She was 1B to Mars’ 1A with both having outstanding performances on their side of the ball. Emyah Jackson and Miya Jackson also had good games on offense for Timberline. On Silas’ side, Danielle Bardizian was the offensive leader for the Rams. She totaled 6 kills and multiple blocks that helped the Rams stay alive throughout the night.
Timberline will be on the road this Thursday (10/1) to face Mount Tahoma. Silas will take on River Ridge at home this Thursday as well (10/1).
