What a wild week 4 of the NFL season with very close games from start to finish. A lot of big stars were also lost for the season with guys like Malik Nabors and Tyreek Hill going down and new young stars off to nice starts like the New York Giants duo of Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo. Professor DW’s Football Pick ’em Challenge was also very close with the tiebreaker guaranteed to come into play either for 1st or 2nd place. Only three entrants had a chance to finish in the top two heading into Monday Night’s doubleheader with Todd Sayre leading the way with 12, Greg Hargrave with 11, and Shawn O’Neill with 10.
Other contestants also had 10, but Shawn was the only one to pick the New York Jets so he could make up a game on Greg and end up tied for second. Todd also picked the Jets while Greg took Miami. All three picked Denver so everything really came down to the Jets and the Dolphins. Despite a serious injury to Tyreek Hill, Miami held off the Jets due to so many penalties on New York. That gave Greg the win and guaranteed a tie between him and Todd while Shawn was eliminated. The total field goal yardage was 2,216 this week and Greg’s guess of 1,786 beat out Todd’s guess of 3,000, giving Greg the win and Todd the second-place finish.
Greg punches his ticket to the postseason tournament and also got by the Professor to earn the $27 payout. Todd Sayre also locks in a spot in the postseason tournament and both now have a chance to win the Ticket Bonanza! That includes two tickets to the Mariners, Seahawks, Kraken, Sounders, Storm, Tacoma Rainiers, and Emerald Downs. Nobody has blocked out anyone as eight different contestants have finished in the top two with 28 spots still available. Again, both can continue to play in the regular season to try to block out some of the spots for the tournament to up their chances of winning.
The Professor bounced back somewhat with 10 correct picks this week. He missed the Jets-Dolphins game. DW also thought Washington would take down Atlanta easily and Los Angeles would roll New York. He actually did better on the more difficult games to pick but anything was better than the week 3 letdown.
In the least picked upset of the week, the New York Giants sprung an upset of the previously undefeated Los Angeles Chargers. Only three contestants correctly called that as Trent Twamley, Kevin Hamrick, and ESN’s ineligible, just for fun contestant Tyler Hergert believed in the young Giants. Other upsets that were rarely picked were Jacksonville over San Francisco and Pittsburgh over Minnesota. We also decided to give everyone a point for the crazy Packers-Cowboys tie, not that it affected the contest at all but everyone got a free point because of that.
Week 5’s contest is up. The deadline to get your entry in is 4pm on Thursday so get signed up now. Congratulations Greg and Todd and best of luck to everyone this week.
