(Chehalis, WA) The WF West Bearcats came into the night 4-1 in EVCO 2A play and have shut out their last 3 opponents. The Black Hills came in at 2-3 in league and looking to right the ship after back to back losses. The last time these teams met it was a 1-0 win for WF West at Black Hills. Now they are playing at the last natural grass field in the league at Bearcat Stadium. Who will come out victorious?

The First Half

The Wolves did a great job of controlling the middle of the field early on with solid play from Ella Jarmin, Ella McNair, and Marlie Voorhies. Those 3 led the charge and got 5 shots on goal in the first half but were turned away time and again by Bearcat keeper Charlee Nelson.

As the half went on the wings of the Bearcats got more and more involved in the action and the experience of WF West took over.

In the 25th minute Lauren Kelley sent a cross in and Izzy Teeter put it in for the 1-0 lead.

Just 5 minutes later Reese Mishler found herself open with the ball just outside the 18 yard box. She put the perfect touch on the ball to have it drop in the net for the 2 0 lead.

Kelley got another assist in the 35th minute this time it was Ashlen Gruginski that scored and in just a 10 minute span the Bearcats were up 3-0.

That was the score at the end of the first half.

The second half was very evenly between both sides with both defenses playing strong. The Wolves in total put 13 shots on goal while the Bearcats had 12 including the 3 first half goals.

Angela Gibbs made an incredible save in the 67th to keep a second half shutout going for the Wolves. Each team would get a corner kick in the 2nd half but in the end the 3 first half goals were enough for the Bearcats to improve to 5-1 in league play and dropped the Wolves to 2-4 in the EVCO 2A.

MVP and UP Next

Our Thorbeckes’ MVP could have gone to several players for the Bearcats as it always goes to the winning team. However with 13 saves and a 4th shutout in a row Charlee Nelson earned that honor. Lauren Kelley and her 2 assists was in the conversation but has already been an MVP this season.

The Wolves’ Angela Gibbs played well in goal and Marlie Voorhies stood out in the midfield all game long.

Up next for WF West is a home match on Thursday October 16th against Tumwater (6-0) who hasn’t lost a league match since 2017. Black Hills hosts Shelton (0-6) on the 18th as well.
