Lakes 3, Gig Harbor 0 (17-25, 21-25, 12-25)
(Lakewood, WA) The Lakes Lancers and Gig Harbor Tides met on the court for a big Puget Sound League battle. Lakes came into the game tied with Timberline for second place in the PSL Nisqually league at 8-2. Gig Harbor was a part of a three-way tie for second place in the PSL Narrows with a 6-4 record. Both teams compete in an extremely talented volleyball conference and have made their presence known in the 3A classification. As the playoffs approach, a game like this may have seeding implications as the rest of the season progresses. Nonetheless, the Tides made their way to Lakewood to face the Lancers in a competitive 3A matchup
Set One
In the early stages of the first set, the game was even. Both teams were exchanging points from the likes of Gig Harbor’s Maggie Maharry and Piper Hodskins, and Lakes’ Marley Alefaio and Moki Filiaga. Filiaga would be up serve for the Lancers with the game tied 6-6. With her at the serving line, she would help Lakes go on a three-point run to take control of the first set. This saw a shift in momentum in favor of the Lancers, who would gain the lead and not look back. Another three-point swing would have Lakes take a commanding lead with Kerra Tualamali’i at the serving line. Gig Harbor would try their best to stay in the game, but he offense of Lakes was too much. Lakes would win set one 25-17, being led by Marley Alefaio, Moki Filiaga, and Kerra Tualamali’i on offense.
Set Two
Set two was the most competitive set of the night, with both teams neck and neck as the set went on. The Lancers would take an early lead with Jeny Solomua leading the charge. She would secure three kills in the early possessions and help Lakes take a 7-3 lead. This did not deter the Tides, though. Lola Glogovac came up to serve, and Gig Harbor scored 3 straight to put the game within one. From here, it was a back-and-forth battle with neither team getting the upper hand. Gig Harbor led 19-17 but after a 2 point run from Lakes, the momentum was back on their side. The Lancers finished out the set on a three point swing with the help of Marley Alefaio, Elira Blanchard, and Kerra Tualamali’i who finished the set of the final two kills. Lakes would win set two 25-21 to take the 2-0 set lead.
Set Three
Lakes came out in set three with pure dominance. The early parts of the set were close between the teams. Lakes would go on a small run and find themselves leading 10-6 after a kill fro Marley Alefaio. This would be the beginning of the end as the Lancers would bring a storm of offense for the remainder of the set. It would all come to an ed after Jeny Solomua would serve for sic straight points and put the dagger into the Tides. Lakes would win set three 25-12 and complete the sweep in an outstanding offensive display.
MVP and Stats
Our Thorbecks MVP of the game went to Marley Alefaio who was a monster on the front lines for Lakes. She tallied 8 kills and 3 blocks on the game and was a massive contributor to this Lakes team to help get the victory. Other standout players for Lakes included Moki Filiaga who had 7 kills and an ace. Jeny Solomua had 3 kills and helped Lakes go on that six point run with her serving. Kerra Tualamali’i had 9 kills on the game and an ace. Karsyn Alefaio had 3 kills and was standout on defense for the Lancers.
For Gig Harbor, Molly Noble and Peyton Heim were both great on defense for the Tides. Bethany Rajnas had 4 kills and 3 blocks on the night. Piper Costa-Hodskins, Kylie Goranson, and Maggie Maharry all found themselves with multiple kills and blocks in the game as well.
Lakes will be back at home on Tuesday, October 21st to face River Ridge with a 7:15 start time. Gig Harbor is set to face Lincoln at home on Tuesday, October 21st with a 7:15 start time.
