Curtis 3, Olympia 0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-17)
(University Place, WA) It was a strange night to begin with and the whole vibe was thrown off a bit due to traffic. The freeway from Olympia up to Curtis was a mess and the Bears arrived late and they hustled through the JV match with little warm-up and and ended it after 2 sets that Curtis won. Normally, JV games go 3 sets with the 1st two to 25 and the 3rd set to 15 and they play that 3rd set regardless so the JV team’s get all 3 sets.
On this night the games were already 25-30 minutes late and not wanting to go too late especially if the varsity match went 5 sets they began as soon as they could.
The first set was a true back and forth with a couple of early runs at the service line. Olympia struck first with reeling off 5 straight points for a Bears 8-2 lead with 1 ace. Stella Sheeran had a big kill in that run and solid net play from Addison Wilson.
The Vikings Elaina Duong had the answer with 5 point run of her own with 2 aces. The Bears re-asserted themselves with Sheeran hitting 4 straight points also with a pair of aces and gave Olympia a 13-8 lead.
Curtis then went to work and got a lift when Kate Harris entered the match who settles the defense down and sets up the offense. Harris was running late and came into the match at this time and quickly shored up the middle of the defense. The Viks Kennedy Kinley came on to serve trailing 15-11 and got that chunk of points and handed Curtis their 1st lead in the set 16-15 before Oly tied it at 16.
The two teams would trade points and battle to a 24-23 Curtis advantage and put it away to take the 1st set 25-23.
In the 2nd set it wouldn’t be until the 12th server to score a service point as the two teams simply traded points. The big run for Curtis came when they led 13-11 and Selana Morales showed she can do more than come up with big blocks and devastating kills when she served up 3 points to open up the Viks lead to 16-11.
Curtis pushed it to set point at 24-18 when Sheeran for the Bears would not give up and fired off 3 straight points with an ace to get within 3 trailing 24-21. Curtis took a time-out and on the next serve, Sheeran froze the Vikings defense as they let the ball drop and it just missed the back line by an inch to be out and secured the win for Curtis to go up 2-0.
In the clinching set Curtis took control when Harris scored 3 with an ace and a Moralews spike to go up 13-11. Mia Nelson then got the serve back 1 point later and hit 4 and the Vikings surged to an 18-12 lead, a lead the Bears could not overcome as Curtis completed the sweep with a 25-17 win. Kayla Baker was very active all night on the net but especially in the stretch run of the clinching set.
Baker’s effort caught our eye and she was named our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the match. Baker’s presence on the net was big in this contest. Others in the running included Kate Harris, Elaina Duong, Mia Nelson and Selana Morales.
Stella Sheeran stood out for the Bears along with Elyse Juergens and Addison Wilson. Also, Sophie Deiss that came up from the JV team to get some varsity time played really well at the net.
Curtis improves to 7-1 in league play and is all alone in 2nd place trailing only 8-0 Emerald Ridge. The Vikings are now 12-2 on the season. The Viks will Travel to Rogers on Monday then host South Kitsap next Wednesday and will wrap up league play at Yelm on the 28th.
Olympia falls to 6-2 and are in a tie for 3rd with Sumner. Olympia is 9-4 for the year and will host Puyallup on Monday, then host Spanaway Lake on Wednesday and will travel to Sumner in what could be a huge match in the finale on the 28th.
