White River Hornets 3, Thomas Jefferson Raiders 1

(Tacoma, WA) A pair of NPSL foes squared off for the third time this season as the White River Hornets, seeded third in the District 3 3A Girls Soccer Tournament, took on the Thomas Jefferson Raiders, seeded 11th. White River won twice in the regular season, taking both matches by a score of 4-0. The winner would secure their berth in the State Tournament was on the line, and a spot in the District Semifinals on Thursday, while the loser of the match would head to a loser-out match on Thursday. Through the rain and battling the wind, the two teams settled on who would head to State and whose path to State would be eminently trickier.

Thomas Jefferson got off to a great start, controlling the tempo and the pace early. Thomas Jefferson’s Jordynn Koria worked her way towards the 18 for a shot that was saved in the first few minutes of the match. White River responded with a pair of corner kicks right after that, but the Raiders stopped the Hornets from any sort of scoring threat. After White River’s Jordyn Daigle pulled a shot wide, one minute later, the Hornets would strike. Making a wonderful run, Lillian Banks got by a Raiders defender and strided inside the 18, blasting a shot that found the net for the first goal of the match. White River led 1-0 less than 10 minutes into the match. The Hornets controlled the majority of the half after that, as they had five corner kicks in the opening frame. In the 32nd minute, White River struck again. Jordyn Daigle received a pass about 30 yards out, moved by a few Raiders defenders, got into open space, and fired away from distance and scored, making it 2-0. 90 seconds later, Daigle got another one. After Thomas Jefferson’s keeper came to the top of the box to send the loose ball away, it went right to Daigle, who took a chance from even further away, and made it 3-0 with her heads up play. The Hornets remained on top 3-0 going into the halftime break.

After a couple of White River chances early in the second half, the Hornets lead shrank as Thomas Jefferson found the scoreboard. Malieta Redmond made a run starting from the middle of the field to the corner on the right side, before sending a cross into the 18. Jazmyne DuBose and a Hornets defender were right next to each other, but DuBose got a piece of the ball and deflected it into the net for the goal. White River still led by a count of 3-1, but there was a half-hour of action still to be played in regulation. Thomas Jefferson keeper Anna Vincent was still busy, as White River kept pounding the net with shots, but she got stronger as the match went on, making some key saves throughout the half. Thomas Jefferson had a corner kick just past the halfway portion of the second half, and had numerous attempts to score, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Raiders kept trying to throw everything they had at the Hornets defense, but couldn’t crack the code again, as White River went on to win the match 3-1.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP went to White River’s Jordyn Daigle. Her two goals in two minutes helped secure White River’s spot in the State Tournament, and her goals proved to be the difference in the match.

With the win, White River has secured a spot in the State Tournament and advanced to the State Semifinals. The Hornets improve to 16-2 and will face Central Kitsap on Thursday at 5 PM.

Thomas Jefferson drops to 9-7-2 and plays #8 Decatur on Thursday at 7 PM in a loser-out match.
