(Tumwater WA) League faced off for the first time this season as W.F. West went on the road to face Tumwater. The Bearcats came into the game 10-1 on the season and 5-0 in the league, where they reign atop the 2A Evco. Tumwater was tied for second place in the league with Aberdeen after they split their series just days earlier and looked to get back in the win column. The result was a fierce battle back and forth with multiple lead changes and great displays of offense from both teams.

W.F West 7, Tumwater 5

Jimmy Womach started on the mound for Tumwater and got to work early, only allowing a single in the first inning to Hiroto Smaciarz, but would retire the side in quick order. Tumwater wasted no time getting the bats going in their first offensive outing as Wyatt Chase would get a single and then find his way onto third base after a wild pick-off attempt from pitcher Emmett Goodman. With a runner in scoring position, Luke Overbay would get the first run and RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly and put Tumwater on the board first. Jimmy Womach and Charlie Crawford would also find themselves on base with a hit-by-pitch and walk, but would be left stranded.

W.F. West had a quick response at the top of the second as Beckman Dvorak would be hit by a pitch, followed by a walk to Gage Wiens. A single from Miles Martin would load the bases, and Reece Marquez would tie the game with an RBI bunt. Wyatt Hoffman would then reach on a fielder’s choice for another RBI, and the Bearcats took the lead. Tumwater would go through a quick second inning with Max Bunn being stranded on second base after a double.

Both teams would calm down in the third and fourth innings and while runners did get on base it was mainly through walks or errors. The only hit in those ininngs being Jayden Stacy for Tumwater who doubled in the fourth. Things picked right back up though in the fifth. W.F West only saw four batters in the top of the fifth in which Alex Stafford hit a single. For Tumwater though the bats got hot and Wyatt Chase got the show started for a single and after two stolen bases he was once again at third. Luke Overbay would draw a walk and steal second to have two runners in scoring position. Charlie Crawford then hit a single up the middle that would score both runners and take a 3-2 lead for Tumwater.

The celebration did not last long for Tumwater, however as W.F. West would deliver a five-run top of the sixth. It started with Gage Wiens and Miles Martin both getting hit with pitches to get two runners aboard. Reece Marquez would then walk to load the bases for the Bearcats. Wyatt Hoffman would get walked as well, which scored a runner and tied the game. Hiroto Smaciarz would continue the Bearcats’ success with an RBI off of an error to take the lead. Alex Stafford one-upped everyone with a 3-run double that cleared the bases for W.F. West to secure a 7-3 lead. Tumwater did not quit, though, and loaded the bases in three batters, which would pay off with an RBI single from Peyton Davis. Wyatt Hoffman would get two big strikeouts, however, to end the inning for W.F. West, where it all came down to the seventh.

Tumwater’s defense made the top of the seventh very quick for W.F. West, including two strikeouts from Luke Overbay. Tumwater started to get going once again as Jimmy Womach led things off with a single, followed by an error that allowed Charlie Crawford to get on base. Liam Gustafson would then reach on a fielder’s choice, and with runners on the corners, Jayden Stacy would hit a sacrifice fly into left field to score one run and bring the game within two. Kade Acker would then hit a single and put runners on second and first. With Max Bunn at the plate and two outs, though, Gustafson would attempt to steal third, and both Wyatt Hoffman and Alex Stafford recognized it. Stafford would deliver a dart to third baseman Gage Wiens, who laid down the tag in time and won the game for W.F. West.

MVP

The Thorbecks’ MVP of the game went to Alex Stafford, who went 2-4 on the day, including a 3-run RBI double, a stolen base, and won the game for the Bearcats with his throwout of Liam Gustafson as Tumwater tried to make a late comeback.
